Training School To Be Held Her e September 14th t Ten new faculty appoint ments at Brevard College were announced today by Dr. J. Bru ton Harris, Dean of the College. CoL William N. Beard will serve as an instructor in the de partment of mathematics. Col. Beard, a native of New Bern, attended Wake Forest College and received the B. S. degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point He has 30 graduate hours at the Mass achusetts Institute of Technol ogy. Upon his retirement from the United States Army, he re ceived the M. A. T. degree from Duke University. His wife, Mrs. Sarah 8. Beard, will teach English. Mrs. Beard received both the A.B. and M.A. degrees from Duke University. She has taught in the high schools of Hampton, Virginia, and has worked in intelligence for the United States Air Force. Mrs. Irene Moser joins the library staff as an assistant A native of Swannanoe, she re ceived the M. A. in L. S. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after earning the A. B. degree at Vassar. She is the sister of Miss Joan Moeer who returns to the faculty of the music department after a year of doctoral studies at the University of Michigan. Dr. Chorinjeth Rajagopalan comes from the University of Kansas to teach biology. After receiving the B. S. and M. S. degrees from the University of Saugor in his native India, Dr. Rajagopalan received the PhD. degree from -Kansas. Miss Tay lor, a resident of Henderson ville, received the B. S. degree Bennett Asks Pilots To Be Extra Cautious Brevard’s Mayor Raymond F. Bennett has issued a call for pilots of private planes to “take extra precautions" dut> Ing the Labor Day weekend Sept. 2-4. In a prepared statement the mayor said that last year private pilots flew a record 3A billion miles in more than 105,000 aircraft “while achiev ing the lowest accident rate in history.” “We expect many of these pilots to be flying over the long Labor Day weekend,” he added. “Just as on the high ways ,we ask these airmen to take extra precautions during the holiday period.” Chester W. Wells of At lanta, area manager for the Federal Aviation Administra tion (FFA), says that “FAA employes will be working around the dock in coopera tion with the Weather Bureau and the aviation industry in . order to provide extra service to pilots during this period.**' from Union College and the M. A 1063 graduate of Brevard College, Miss Nancy Ting will Join the staff of the mathema tics department. After leaving Brevard, Miss Tiny completed her studies for the A. B. de gree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She re ceived the M. S. degree this summer from the University of Alberta, Canada. Mrs, Ann D. Seckler of Bre ard will teach in the depart ment of English. Mrs. Seckler attended Auburn Uhiersity and received the B. S. degree from Clemson University. She has completed her course work for the master of arts degree at Auburn. While at Auburn, Mrs. Seckler taught English and worked in university relations. In addition, she has taught in the public schools of New York state. Mrs. Billie W. La wing will become a part-time assistant li brarian at the college. Mrs. Lowing, who has been an ele mentary school librarian in the county school system of Dur ham county, received the B. S. degree from the Woman’s Col lege of Georgia. She has taken additional work at Pfeiffer Col lege and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill- Mrs. Lading is the wife pf Luther H. Lawing. Dean of Men and Stu dent Financial Aid Administra tor at Brevard. Dr. Harris also announced that M. Thomas Cousins, a for mer member of the faculty, will return as a part-time instructor on Friday and Saturday in in strumental music. Mr. Cousins is presently on the faculty of the Univmteity of North Caro lina at Greensboro. THE BREVARD,-STAFF Local Firemen Will Host Visiting Groups The ninth annul WNC Firemen’s Association Train ing School will be held here In Brevard fear days begin ning Monday, September 11th and ending Thursday night, September 14th. The training school Is sponsored by the WNC Fire men’s Association, Asheville Buncombe Technical Institute and the North Carolina De partment of Insurance. The Brevard Fire department, under the leadership of Chief Dan Merrill, will host the school. Classes will be held at the Brevard Fire Training Grounds on the Illahee Road near the Brevard Country Club, the Bre vard Fire Station, and at the Olin Mathieson Chemical Cor poration Medical Center Con ference Room. Chief Merrill, assisted by Fred Dalton, Chief of Sky land Fire Deportment, and F. L. McCall, of Olin MatUe son, will direct the school. The school will begin promptly at 6:36 p. m., on Monday night and 7 p. m., each night there after. Classes on Industrial Fire Brigade and Arson will be held at Olin Mathieson. The Officers Fire Training and Pump Classes will be held at the Brevard station. The classes on General Fire Fight ing, Group A Breathing Equip ment, Group B Flammable Liq uids, and Group C Ladder and Rescue, will be held at the Brevard Fire Training Grounds. Instructors for the school are as follows: Arson, Boyd Sossa man; Industrial Fire Brigade, Elwood Inscoe; Officer Train ing, to be announced at the school; Pumps, Tom Landers; Smoke House, Mark Jones, Rich ard J. Silver, and Edward Greer; Flammable Liquids, Dan Merrill, Holly Oxner, and Joe Pickelsimer; Ladders & Res cue, J. D. Rhyne, Clifton Rob bins, and John Bishop. In structors assisting with the school other than those listed above will be firemen from the various departmenjts of the WNC Association. WNC Firemen’s Association covers 24 counties divided in to eight districts. Jack Leath erwood, Chief of the Black Mountain Fire Department, is President of the Association; Wofford Foster, Chief of the Tryon Fire Department, is First Vice President; and Bill Hudson, Assistant Chief of the Asheville Fire Depart ment, Is Second Vice Presi dent. Boyd Sossaman, of Syl va, is Treasurer; and Mark Jones, of Enka, is secretary of the Association. Open competition on ladder and hose evolutions between teams of firemen from the dif ferent fire departments will be held on Thursday night, Septem ber 14th. Two fine trophies have been donated by the Olin Matbieson Chemical Corpora tion to be awarded to the top teams in the contest.
