TRY THE TIMES WANT APS Transylvania And Four Other Counties Win (Cm tinned Pace One) triet, asker Edney whether the Army Corps of Engineers had been consulted about per forming the dam and river channel improvement. Edney replied that his commission had worked with TV A on the project planning from its in ception and added that since the five counties concerned lie in the TV A area of oper ation, it’s logical that the work be performed by TVA. Sen. Ervin suggested that every member of the N. C. congressional delegation per sonally contact the Bureau of the Budget and urge inclusion of the initial construction funds in the 1968-69 budget. A spokesman at the meet ing said there was "no neg ative response’’ from the 11 members of the N. C. delega tion present. At the luncheon were 10 of North Carolina’s 11 representatives and one of its two U. S. senators. Absent were U. S. Rep. L. H. Fountain, Democrat of Tarboro who represents the Second Dis trict, and U. S. Sen. B. Everett Jordon, Democrat of Saxapa haw. Fountain was said to have been detained elsewhere by duties as a representative to the United Nations in New York while Sen. Jordon was out of town. Jordon was represented at the luncheon by his adminis trative assistant, William Coch rane. To show what support the dam project holds in WNC, Chairman Edney read the group a long list of organiza tions backing the proposal. It was said that the dam that will inundate the community of Little River cannot be relocat ed without impairing the effec tiveness of the entire 14-dam network. The 14 dams will create lakes covering some 6,700 acres of land but will provide freedom from periodic flood ing to 13,000 acres. The city of Asheville will get as part of the program a $6.6 million levee on the east side of the French Broad river, to pro tect the city’s $100 million industrialized waterfront.
