In making the appointment,
Col. C.T.B. Harris of Shorter
College, expressed regret at
the loss of Bill Moore but said:
“We have as good a re
placement as possible in
Coach Rogers.”
Said Rogers: “I’m very hap
py to have an opportunity of
this type and hope to do a
good job.”
Rogers is the son of Mrs
Jane Rogers of 2 McMinn
Street, Brevard, and the late
Mr. Paul Rogers. He was a fine,
all - around athlete at Brevard
High School in the early 1960’s.
He was an outstanding left
handed baseball pitcher and All
Blue Ridge Conference in bas
ketball. He and the well - re
membered Johnnie Bradburn
made one of the most outstand
ing guard tandems ever seen
at BHS and Brevard College.
After graduation from Bre
vard College, Rogers spent
two years in military service
before going to Shorter Col
lege.
He joined the Hawk’s coach
ing staff last year and will be
experiencing his first venture
as a head coach this season.

Brevard High Track Team Wins
Ivy Conference Championship
Brevard High Track team

the best 880 men in the state,
captured the Ivy Conference
Championship at Brevard Col
lege, last Thursday afternoon.
Tri-Captains Howard Brad
burn and Eagle Moss led their
team to the Championship
victory. Bradburn set a con
ference record in winning the
Shot Put with a toss of 45’
V/i”, and finished third in
the Discus behind teammates
John Ray Gentry, who had a
record throw of liVV’, and
Gary Nelson. Moss won the
100 yd. dash, the 220 yd. dash,
was a member of the record
breaking 880 yd. relay team
composed of Charlie Carr,
Vernon Gardin and Wayne
Robinson with a time of
1:34.5, and finished second
behind Wayne Robinson in
the Triple Jump.
Brevard was the second
school in the Ivy Conference
to win the championship.
Since the birth of the Confer
ence, Enka had conquered
the championship until the
Blue Devils threw and ran to
daylight this past Thursday.
The trophy was the second
for the track team this sea
son. The team finished 2nd in
Class II of the WNC Relays,
held the week-end of April
24th, at Brevard College and
sponsored Jointly by the Bre
vard Jaycees, Brevard College
and Brevard High School
Track Teams.

Bailey of Enka as the Most
Outstanding Field and Track

Program Will Begin On June I
Transylvania County Coordi
nator Child Care plans to open
its first state licensed unit on
June 1st, in space provided by
First United Methodist church.
Twenty eight children can be
accommodated in this non
profit center. Daily program for
3, 4 and 5-year-old children will
include a health check, super
vised indoor and outdoor play,
morning and afternoon snack,
and a nap after a hot lunch.

committees on staffing, admis
sions policies, budget and recog.

Program Highlights
WPNF To Carry "Rebel 400
Race
This Saturday, May 9th, is the
running of the annual “Rebel
400” stock care race at the Dar
lington International Speedway
at Darlington, S. C.
WPNF will once again be
broadcasting the Rebel 400, and
will join a network of hundreds
of stations in carrying the
broadcast. Local sponsors this
year include: Citizens Tele
phone Company, Hayes Motors
and Sledge Radio and Televi
sion. It is only through the
cooperation of these sponsors
that WPNF is able to broadcast
the race.
The broadcast gets underway
at 2:45 p.m. and the race is due
to start at 3:00 p.m.
