Owen, 11 Washington Ave„ Brevard, recently received the combat Infantryman badge near Doe The badge is a unique and eheriabed award that is highly coveted by its recipi ents. The award was origi nated during World War n to recognise the role of the in. fantry. It can be awarded only to a member of an in fantry unit of brigade, regi mental or smaller she unit who satisfactorily performed in active ground combat against a hostile force for a period of time. In honor of its singular meaning, the badge is worn above all other awards and decorations, over the left breast. It is a bine rectangle with a silver rifle mounted on it, superimposed over a curved wreath. Subsequent awards are represented by stars at the top center of the wreath. Spec. Owen received the award while assigned as a rifleman in Company C, 1st Battalion, 20th infantry of the Americal Division’s 11th Last Rites For Major Davis Held Tuesday Major (USA Ret.) Clyde M. Davis, 55, died unexpectedly Sunday morning at the home of a brother, James A. Davis of Brevard. He was a native of Union County, S. C. and a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the VFW, Hedrick Rhodes Post No. 5206, the American Legion, Hubert M. Smith Post No. 77, and the National Rifle Associ ation. Surviving in addition to the brother above, are two other brothers, Carl L. and Dewey F. Davis, both of Union, S. C.; and two sisters, Mrs. William Crosby Of Charleston, S. C. and Mrs. James McAbee of Union, S. C. Services were held Tuesday in Thomas Shepherd Memorial Chapel with Mr. Kenneth Willis officiating. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens, Union, S. C. with full military rites. A new law removed the “in ability to pay* requirement for all veterans 65 years of age oi older having war or peacetime service, and for veterans who receive VA pensions. Dr. Elwell Participates In "Unique Program” Chapel Hill A Brevard physician is the most recent participant in the unique “Continuing Education in International Medicine” pro gram in operation at all three North Carolina medical schools. Alfred M. Elwell, M.D., spent two weeks at the North Caro lina Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill, “on sabbatical” from his daily practice. He is one of 26 internists who have participat ed in the program over a two year period. Funded by the North Caro lina Regional Medical Program, the project is designed to help physicians up-date their medi cal knowledge and, in turn, de liver better health care to their patients. During the two-to-four-week sabbatical, a participating phy sician may accompany residents on rounds, visit clinics, join specialty conferences and de partment seminars, and do library research. The participating internists are placed singly in one of the three medical schools. This year, the Regional Medical Program project has been expanded to include family practitioners.
