Transylvania and the rest of
Western North Carolina were
hit with winter’s first snow
storm on Tuesday, and the
weatherman says there’s more
on the way.
It started snowing about 7:00
o’clock Tuesday morning, and in
less than an hour, the ground
was covered and streets and
highways were hazardous.
The temperature did not
rise above the mid-30s during
the day, and they dropped
down in the 20s during the
night. This made for icy con

went out to motorists in all
sections of WNC and upper
I South Carolina.
A rash of minor accidents
were reported Tuesday but none
with major damages or personal
injuries.

Top Story During Past Year
By - Staff Writer
With the ending of 1970,
the TIMES staff again at
tempts to single out the top
10 news stories of the year
in Transylvania county. We
know it is impossible to do
this to all our readers’ satis
faction, for people differ
widely in what they consider
important stories; neverthe
less, we must try. And we
have tried by attempting to
find a common denominator
wherever possible; i.e., to se
lect stories which, in our
opinions, have had the widest
interest and ewwect in the
county as a whole.
The stories about the weath
er, the school bond issue, the
elections and several of the
others in the list here have
been of interest to all: We all
experience the weather, the
school bond issue was hotly
debated and closely fought at
the polls; the general elections
affected us all in the people
and parties we voted into Of
fice.
We should note this year
as we did last, that most of
the stories chosen have been
those which were not single
headlines but continuing re
ports, followed up for weeks
or months. Our selection of
news then amounts to what
might be called the top 10
matters of public interest in
1970 rather than the top 10
news stories; but we shall not
