The Merrilfa Masonry cet era won the Brevard Indus trial League championship last week with wins over Cardinal Cleaners and Msgah Texaco. The champs started the weel with a 87-76 win over Cardinal Cleaners paced by Charlei Owenby with 42 points. Other: in double figures for Merrill’: were BUI Lowe with 16 points and Gerald Edwards with It points. Jim Hendrix was high for the losers with 18 points, fol lowed by BUI Wike with 16 and William Hooper with It. Merrill’s then continued their winning ways with a convincing 112-37 win over Piagah Texaco that gave them the title. Owenby, Lowe and Edwards were again high for Merrill’s with 5t, 16 and 16 points re spectively. Sam Green was high ior the losers with 10 points. In other Industrial League games, Cardinal Cleaners whipped American Thread 64-57, with BUI Wike and Bin Hooper high for the winners with 27 and 23 points respec tively. Johnny Peterson and Larry Tinsley each had 18 points to lead American Thread. American Thread then bounc ed back in a later game to de feat Pisgah Texaco 76-46, paced by Bill May’s 23 points. Joe SUvers was high for Pisgah Texaco with 13 points. With one more week of play remaining, MerriU’s Masonry has wrapped up the title with an unblemished record of 11-0. Cardinal Clean ers is in second place with a 7-4 record, American Thread is third with a 3-8 mark, and fourth place is held down by Pisgah Texaco with a 1-16 record. A business meeting will be held fallowing Breakfast Plans for the 1971 season will be dis cussed, which include Tuesday Ladies Day, Luncheons*, Tourna ments, visitors from the Blue Ridge Association, Botany Wttods Country Club and trip to other clubs. Leon Passmore, club mar ager, will give lessons for be ginners starling April 0th, a 10:00 o'clock a.m. Harlem Stars To Play Local Coaches On March 22 At BHS On Monday night, the 22nd of (his month, the Student Council of Brevard Senior High School will sponsor a basketball game, featuring a group of players known as the Harlem Stars. This team will play in the Brevard High Gym against the coach ing staff of BBS along with other coaches of Transyl vania county. The game starts at 8:00 p.m. and will probably prove to be one of fun and excitement. Admission for students will be $1.00, and for adults, $1.50. Buddy Whitmire, chair man of the Projects Commit tec of the BBS Stndent Council, urges all who can attend to do so, as the pro ceeds will go to worthy causes. Part of the Money will go towards making im provements throughout the BBS rumpus. Th» Council has also decided to contrib ute to the Ben Brewer Fund, which was organised to help pay for Ben’s expensive kid ney transplant. In memory of Mike Whitesides, Council also wishes to do something in his honor. Everyone is invited to come and support The Council in this fine project. Lamar Clark Selected To Play In North-South Football Game BHS Track Team Hosts Meet Friday The Brevard Blue Devils will get their 1971 track sea son underway this Friday afternoon as they host, the Brevard Invitational Track meet on the Brevard College track. Many of the area’s finest high school track teams will be par ticipating in the meet, as the teams from high schools ir Buncombe county, Haywooc county, plus West Hendersor High, will all compete here Fri day. , The meet will get underway at 3:00 p.m., and a large crowd is expected to be on hand to get a preview of the Blue Devil track prospects for this Spring. Golfers who participated in the USGA system in 1970, do not need to re-enter for the 1971 season. Those interested in establishing and maintaining an official handicap are en couraged to register at the pro shop. The Tournament Committee has tentative plans to award a low gross and low net champion in the men's 1971 club cham pionship tournament, and the USGA system will apply. USGA Definitions 1. Gross score—Is a player’s actual score before it is adjust ed by bis handicap. 2. Handicap—Is the number ft Handicap stroke bole — is a hole on which a player ap plies a handicap stroke to his gross score. The numerical order in which handicap strokes are allocated to the holes of the course are shown on the score cards. 7. Net score — is a player’s score after his gross score has been adjusted by his handicap. 8. Par—is the score that an expert golfer would be expect ed to make for a given hole. Par means errorless play with out flukes and under ordinary weather conditions, allowing two strokes on the putting green. Par is based on yardage recommended by tke USGA. 9. Course rating—is the evalu ation of the playing difficulty of a course compared with other rated courses. 10. “Preferred lies” and “winter rules”—are local rules which permit improving the lie On Saturday, March 6th, G. F Rice. Ron Brewer, Jack Thomas, Buster Carr and Chan Ashworth won the morning round with a two-under-par 34. In afternoon play, Walter Clayton, Jim Martin, Gil Coan, Perk Parker and Harry Ballard, scored a four-under-par 32 on the front nine. A1 Perkins, Fritz Merrell, Charlie Eggles ton and Charlie Link won the last nine, with a score of 35. On March 7th, Walter Clay ton, J. P. Jones, Jim Chapman and Marshall Gillespie won honors with a front nine score of 35. In the 18-hole round, the team of Tommy Carpenter, Jim Martin, Carol McCall and Charlie Link tied Tom Mitchell, Ray Simmons, Butch Clayton and Marshall Gillespie.
