These Days
Or - Behind The News
From Washington
By -
John Chamberlain
Ralph Nader, tt turns out,
is becoming the idol of the
concerned young. Instead of
following Mark Rudd and
Bernarditte Dohrn into the
ranks of the nihilistic
Weathermen, they have de
cided to complete their edu
cations, preferably in law,
with a view to political ca
reers as tributes for con
sumerism. While this is bet
ter than preparing for a life
of bomb throwing, it involves
a question that is not. easily
settled: Where does the will
to protect the consumer for
his own good degenerate into
a busybodyism that makes
life intolerable for civilised
beings?
I have always been of two
minds about Nader; I don’t re
gard him as either god or devil.
The country is undoubtedly in
his debt for promoting the use
of scat belts, which might not
have been made part of the re
quired automotive equipment if
it hadn’t been for his agita
tion. On the other hand, Nader
has promoted an overemphasis
on the danger arising from me
chanical defects in the run-of
the mill Detroit car. It is still
the driver who is to blame for
most of the accidents.
The name of Richard D.
Wayman is by no means as
famous as Ralph Nader's.
You don’t, see young law
school undergraduates fore
going a Washington summer
as one of Nader’s Raiders to
become a Wayman Highway
man. Wayman doesn’t invite
young people to indulge
themselves in the self-right
eous delights of busybody
ism. He has merely set up
a Highway Safety Founda
tion as an independent, non
profit organization (head
quarters at Mansfield, Ohio)
that has undertaken to in
vestigate 10,000 accidents in
the hope that it will enable
safety engineers, road build
ers, automobile manufactur
ers, lawmakers, and psyc8&<
atrists to do something prac
tical about the accident rate.
A Cleveland businessman.
Mr. Wayman became involved
in his meaningful hobby be
cause of the death of a close
friend in a highway mishap.
His four-man teams (each con
sisting of a trained investiga
tor, a behavioral scientist, an
engineer, and a photographer)
have been combing the roads
of Pennsylvania and other
states since 1967, and have now
come up with a mass of infor
mation about 4.571 accidents.
The general conclusions are
still tentative (Mr. Wayman
doesn’t trust small samples),
but they do not support some
of the wilder claims of the
Naderites about the “unsafe at
any speed” aspects of the
motor car.
Item One: vehicle defects
or mechanical failures such
as faulty steering gears and
stuck accelerators occur in
less than one per cent of
fatal auto accidents.
Item Two: the chances of an
“unrestrained person” (i.e.,
one without a seat belt) being
killed in an accident are “four
times as great as for occupants
wearing belts.”
This puts Naderism in per
spective: his “raiders” should
lay off their busybodism
about the car itself and con
centrate on educating the
driver to use the seat belt,
which is now standard equip
ment with each automobile.
The Highway Safety Founda
tion thinks its studies point to a
defective conception of driver
training. The neophyte driver
is not taught to respond prop
erly in emergencies involving
skids and blowouts. He doesn’t
know about the phenomenon of
“hydroplaning” in which the
car’s front wheels actually leave
the road at higher speeds oh
wet pavements. Drunken driv
ing is, of course, an old story:
half the deaths come from this.
There isn’t enough evidence to
tell- us much about the effects
.-«£ -drug abuse on driving, but
“tilts will no doubt come as the
in - .depth investigation . con
tinues. The trouble with obtain
ing drug evidence is that it

PROBLEM: The Stubborn Balloon.
NEEDED: Two cans, a rubber balloon, soap suds,
nail and hammer.
DO THLS: Make a nail hole in one can. Put air into
the balloon, and try to push it into the can without the
hole. It may be impossible. Now try pushing it into the
can with the hole. Place the balloon in the end of the
can with the hole, suck air out of the hole, and see if
balloon can be drawn into the can that way. It is
if the balloon is covered with suds.
HERE’S WHY: To push the balloon into the can,
friction between the metal and rubber must be overcome.
Iq the can without the hole, air trapped in the can must
be compressed also. As the balloon is pushed farther the
air pressure increases.
If air is removed from the can by suction the, bal
may be drawn in, pushed actually by the, greater
re of the air outside the can. Suds will reduce the

CATHEY'S CREEK — Easter

A bingo party was held at

further landscaping and brick

land seeded at the earliest con

An egg hunt was held at the
old Morgan Mill on Sunday
afternoon for the folks at Red
