C., THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 1971 ★ 30 PAGES TODAY * A FOREST FIRE of undetermined origin ravaged some 60 acres on Burrell Mountain last Wednesday, seriously threatening the Brevard watershed on King's Creek before it was finally brought under control. Almost 70 fire fighters were called out to battle the 'blaze, including members of the U. S. Forest Service, Corpsmen from Schenck Conservation Center, students from Brevard College, plus members of the Brevard Volunteer Fire Department and the Town of Brevard. In the photo at left, Ranger Dan Hile of the U. S. Forest Service is shown directing overall ground and air operations to bring the fire under control. Smoke from the destructive blaze can be seen billowing up above his head. At right, a World War II bomber based at Knoxville, Tennessee, dumps a 1,200 gallon load of liquid chemicals on the heart of the blaze on Burrell Mountain. The bomber made six or seven drops of the liquid, which greatly assisted the ground fire fighting forces in bringing the blaze under control. Smoke and flames from the blaze are clearly visible under the aircraft. The old gym, the site in bygone days of numerous triumphs on the hardwoods by the Tornadoes, was moved across the campus from its original site on East French Broad Street several years ago, and had been used as a maintenance building and garage for several college vehicles. As this dramatic 'photo by Brevard College student Kent Deardorff shows, the building was a total loss, but much of the equipment inside was sal vaged by the quick, efficient action of the firemen of the Brevard Volun teer Fire Department. This fire was just one of 12 that the busy local fire men have been called on to battle during the past nine days, and they are certainly to be commended for the outstanding job that they have been doing during the current “fire hazard season”.
