Boy Scout Troop 703 Has Fourth Overnight Trip Is Made On The French' Broad Boy Scout Troop 703 launched its fourth annual canoe trip at the Island Ford Road Bridge at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 1st This big event of the troop program followed the two-night fireless camping trip to Sini ard’s Ridge on April 16th, 17th and 18th. The Trotting Ta rantulas, Kaola Bear and Never Patrols turned out for this trip. The following week the Kaola Bear Patrol demonstrated its superiority by having the big gest turnout for the Project SOAR Clean-up Campaign on Country Club Road. All Scouts that participated were awarded knife lanyards by their Scout master. The 1971 trip down the French Broad was relatively dignified compared to last year’s trip as no canoes upset and no one fell overboard. This accomplishment was at tributed to the months of practice and training that preceded the trip. The fleet of five canoes arrived about fivg minutes ahead of sched ule at 12:25 at Deerwood Lane where lunch was eaten and a sixth canoe joined the group. Explorer Scout John Gustaf son commanded the first canoe with bowman Brian Echols. Other canoes were commanded by David Hayes, Chris John son, Robert Johnson, Earl John son and Scoutmaster Dick Gus tafson with bowmen Frank Cor dell, Alan Winchester, David Johnson, Greg Winston and James Buchanan. All Scouts making the trip were required to be at least First Class in rank. As the lead canoe attempt ed to thread the Wilson Eoad narrows, a combination of currents and the leverage of several submerged branches^ caused it to end up with two-' thirds of the canoe up a log and out of the water. Bow man Frank Cordell skillfully stepped out on the obstruc tion and refloated the craft captained by David Hayes. The canoes arrived at the Barton Rites Held Tuesday Frank Thomas Barton, age 46. of Pisgah Forest, died Sun day night in a Brevard hospital after a brief illness. He was a life-long resident of Transyl vania county and a construc tion worker. Mr. Barton was a veteran of world War II ^nd the Korean conflict havir.e served in the U. S. Navy. He as also a member Of. JLew; E::l Jackson Post of the V.F.'.V. and the Monroe Wilson Post of the American Legion. Surviving are the mother. Mrs. Nellie Allison Barton of Pisgah Forest; 2 brothers. Bill of Pisgah Forest, and Jim of Penrose; 3 sisters, Mrs. Roy Kiiig of Greenville, S. C., Mrs. Fred Houck of Marion, and Mrs. Glenn Cunningham of Hender sonville. Funeral services were con ducted Tuesday in the Boyles ton Baptist Church. The Rev. Joe Medford officiated and burial was in Pisgah Gardens. Nephews served as pallbearers. Moore Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Duke Power Substation at 3:30 p.m. and everyone went ashore to stretch. The fleet “took out” at Ray Parkinson's farm in Eto wah at 6:30 p.m. where the Tenderfoot and Second Class Scouts of the troop Were having an overnight campout. The mariners joined the Tender foot and Second Class Scouts in a game of Capture the Flag after supper. Those camping out were David George John son, John Winston, Dru Brid ge^ Steve' Hinkle, John Mann, Andy Kirk, Kelvin Smallwood, Kevin Norris. Jon Winchester and Chris White. The Trotting tarantulas Patrol displayed ita customary high spirit. The mariners launched at 10:15 a.m. Sunday and head er around Etowah and the great Horseshoe Bend. The needle's eye mcountered list yesr had bee* cleared by floods, bat was replaced by two snags which were navi gated with Considerable diffi culty. Lunch was eaten just above the Highway 191 bridge andithe trip wss finally concluded at 3:30 p.m. at the end of a race to Fanning Bridge. The voyagers were treated to a variety of views of wildlife including a number of d and ducklings, snakes, a num ber of birds including a couple •f bit* heron.
