Glady Branch Club Meets The Glady Branch Exten sion Homesmakers Club met on April 26th at the home of Mrs. Tom Bryson. There were 17 members present. Mrs. Virginia Hamilton, club pre sident, presided. Miss Jean Childers present ed a very interesting pro gram on fabrics and showed samples of new materials on the market today. She also presented slides of “As Others see you”. During the business hour, Mrs. Margaret Norton gave a report on mulching and pruning roses and how to layout flower and evergreen beds for better results. Mrs. Horace Debord gave a report on “Child Disapline and guidance”. Mrs. Stella Seay reported that 10 children gown’s w'-re ready for the hospital. The president reported on the club tour which will be decided by the county coun cil. It was moved and seconded that a contribution be given to friends of the Library. The Club was reminded of the meeting at Montreat. Betty Owenby, Nettie Shook and Virginia Hamilton will attend. Rutk ^J4unter Wrft Qive Recitaf Mrs. Ruth Hunter will pre sent a recital of art songs and arias in the Dunham Music Center at Brevard College on the evening of Tuesday, May 11th, at 8:00 p.m. She will be accompanied by Mrs. George Spicer. Mrs. Hunter is a graduate of Appalachian State Univer sity in English, French, and Music and also attended Davidson College and Ca tawba College. She is pres ently a special student at Bre vard College where she is studying voice with Harvey Miller. Private study in piano and voice has been with Mrs. Vir ginia Wory Linney at Appa lachian and voice with Don ald Plott of Davidson, Clar ence Southern of Westmin ster Choir School and Dr. Perry Daniels at Brevard Music Center. Since moving here in 1952, Mrs. Hunter has been teach ing piano and voice in Bre vard and is currently director of music at St. Timothy Methodist church. She was the public school music teach er in Transylvania County for several years before devoting full time to private teaching and church music, and was for a number of years, direc tor of music at Brevard-David son River Presbyterian church. This year Mrs. Hunter is president of the Brevard Music Lovers Club, a post she has held several times. She is active in the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs MRS. RUTH HUNTER and has held several state of fices. Other organizations in which she has been active are the Brevard Civic Chorus, in which she has appeared as soloist, and the Brevard Little Theatre, appearing in three musicals. Mrs. Hunter’s husband, Duncan, is director of college relations at Olin. They have three children and a grand daughter. Selections on the program will include works by Torelli, Monteverdi, Durante, Schu mann, Tchaikovsky, Mussorg sky. The banquet which was held following the installa tion ceremony was held to celebrate the 40th Anniver sary of the organization’s founding. Forty years ago, the first chapter of the soror ity was formed in Abilene, Kansas. There are now ap proximately 9,600 chapters and over 200.000 members in the United States, Canada and twenty-four foreign countries. In addition to the banquet, traditional ceremonies were observed, the history of the local chapter was reviewed and the new members re ceived their first welcome to membership. Mrs. Ginny Bradford serv ed as Toastmistress for the evening and other members taking part in the program were Mrs. Doris Smith, Mrs. Sandy Corson and Mrs Phyllis Constantine. The central event of tBT evening and the culmination of the program was the pres entation of the Girl of the Year Award to Mrs. Ginny Bradford. The presentation was made by Mrs. Barbara Beine. Fortnightly Club Meets The April 22nd meeting of the Fortnightly Club was held at the home of Mrs. Gerald Cope. Mrs. Jack John son, President, opened the meeting and the Club Litany was led by Mrs. H. W. Sig mon. The President then wel comed new member, Mrs. Eli nor Risher into the Club. During the regular busi ness meeting, thankyou notes were read from the District II President, Mrs. Price, for our assistance at the Fine Arts Festival and from Mrs. Camp bell at the College Library for our recent book donation. President Johnson reminded the members of, the Leader ship coming up and also the Summer Workshop on July 13th. The program was presented by Mrs. Ray Winchester on “The Drug Problem”. The members were well informed on the seriousness of the problem both in the schools and town. Discussion was held at length and all members felt they were well informed and determined to help in any way possible with the problem. The next meeting will be held May 13th at the home of Mrs. G. T. Thomas. ounci The County Council of Ex tension Homemakers met April 30th in the Conference Room at First-Citizens Bank in Brevard with nine clubs represented. Mrs. Edwin Rice, president, presided over the meeting which began with refresh ments. Minutes of the last meeting was read and ap proved. Business included dis cussions and voting on chang ing the name of what has been known as Achievement day. Other names were sub mitted but the original name Achievement Day was voted to be the most appropriate and it still stands. Plans for the out of county tour were discussed. Clubs were asked to help in making tray favors for the hospital for the holidays. Mrs. C. F. Allison, Sr., gave a report on the Exten sio Homemakers District Craft Training Workshop at Montreat. Miss Jean Childers an nounced the Western District meeting on May 4th and 5th in the Montreat Assembly Inn, also the Summer Semi nar for members of North Carolina Extension Home makers Association at Mere dith College, Raleigh, N. C„ June 14th - 17th. Mrs. Cook has been selected as “Young Ca reer Women” to represent the Brevard Chapter at the District Meeting at Lake Junaluska May 2nd. She Will make a five minute talk in competition with representa tives of all chapters of B&PW in the Western District. Her subject is “Challenge of Teaching Today”. Delegates selected to attend this meeting are Helen Byrd, Dot Case, Zebbie McCrary, Becky Clark, Ruth Hunter, Olin Wives Play Bridge Wednesday The Olin Wives monthly bridge luncheon will be held Wednesday, May 12, at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Cannon Country Club. The Nominating Commit tee, Vivian Gillespie, Becky Clark and Deane Dean named the slate of officers for the coming year. Mrs. Lula Mae Briggs, President of the Hendersonville Clulx will officiate in installing the new officers. ☆ Many thanks from the en tire club went to Mrs. Zebbie McCrary for her leadership and planning of the bus trip to Atlanta and the day of shopping at Rich’s. Ninety seven Transylvania ladies took advantage of the trip, completely filling two buses. The afternoon tea and fashion show really demon strated the “long and the short of it” and provided some of the best entertain ment of the day. Mrs. Duncan Hunter, Presi dent announced that she and incoming president, Mrs. Hugo Martin, and Mrs. Milton Massey, convention commit tee chairman, will be attend, ing the annual Convention of the North Carolina Federa tion of Music Clubs, begin ning May 5th through the 7th in Asheville. All mem bers are invited to attend. Mrs. Nan Adams led the program, the theme of which was the electronic organ. Mrs. Kay Storrs introduced the instrument by playing “Thoroughly Modern Millie”, and it was described as being a truly modern instrument, adapted to any type of music and capable of producing many interesting effects. To illustrate this versatility, Mrs. Dolores Smith, a guest of the club, played Song of India, arranged for organ by the well-known Ethel Smith, who was one of the pioneers of the electronic organ. Mrs. Pat Martin and Mrs. Marilyn Massey sang “Born Free” as a duet, Mrs. Adams accompanying on the organ. Mrs. Kay Storrs entertained with songs, accompanied by Mrs. Ann English. All mem bers joined in on the chorus of “April Showers," which was the prelude, to a musical contest called “The Name is the Game”. ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED — Mr. and Mrs. Howard Thomas, of Cleveland, Tennessee, announce the engagement of their daughter, Nina Jean, to Sgt. Keith Elliott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Grady Elliott, Sr., of 217 James street. The bride elect received her BS degree in Psychology at Knoxville College and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The groom-elect has his BS in Business Administration at Western Carolina Uni versity, Cullowhee.
