BREVARD’S JOE WASHING TON, considered to be one of the finest high school prospects ever to come out of the local high school, has elected to stay close and play for Brevard College Tornadoes. The fine young athlete, who was named All-Ivy Conference, All-WNC Scho lastic, and to the Blue team in the annual Blue-White All-Star game, is the third “blue-chipper” from WNC to sign with the Tornadoes. Previously, Ricky McClure of Pisgah and Bobby Miller of Enka had elect ed to come here to Brevard. Wash ington averaged over 18 points per game and a like number of rebounds in leading the Blue Devils of Bre vard High to their finest season ever in basketball. (Times Staff Photo) Youth Baseball Season Opens Here Next Monday Evening Youth baseball here in Bre vard will get underway next Monday evening, May 10th, as the Red Sox and the Braves of the Minor League clash In the opener at 6:00 p.m., fol lowed in the nightcap by the Colts vs. the Bed Sox of the Little League. The season opening double header will be played at the E. L. Lynn Field directly behind Pisgah Forest elementary school. Teams in both the Minor League and the Little League have been practicing hard in anticipation of the beginning of the season, and all beams in both leagues will see action during the first week of play next week. Following Monday’s openers, the rest of the first week’s schedule shapes up this way; Tuesday the Minor League Cards and Panthers play at 6:00 p.m., with the Little League Braves and Mets meeting in th< second game. Thursday’s lineu] sends the Little League Cardi nals against the Pirates in th( first game, followed by th( Minor League Giants vs. the Yankees in the second game. Friday finds the Little League Panthers and Cubs clashing in the opener, followed by the Minor League Giants vs. the Tigers. Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., the Little League Mets and Colts will meet to round out the first week of play. A complete schedule of both leagues will be carried in next week’s edition of the Transylvania Times, and all players are urged to cut them out and keep them handy for reference as the season pro gresses. The schedules of the two leagues have been arranged so that an equal number of Little League and Minor League games will be played during the evenings. One change in the schedulin calls for no games to be playei in either league on Wednesda; evenings. This was done so tha those players wishing to atteni church on Wednesday evening might do so without missing ; regularly scheduled game. The Babe Kuth League will not start play until school is out for the summer, and that schedule will be released later. (Times Staff Photo) Brevard Wins Ivy Track Title The Brevard High Blue Devils placed first in 11 of 17 events and scored a record 145 points here last Wednes day as they waltzed to vic tory in the Ivy Conference track meet on the Brevard College track. The red hot Blue Devils ran ff with everything but the arter’s gun in this, the last ack meet in Ivy Conference istory. Even more laurels came Brevard’s way when Blue Devil’s Wayne Robinson and Charlie Carr were named the Hitstanding performers in the neet. Records came crashing down as a total of eleven new one: were established during the hotly contested meet. Brevard’s eleven first places came in the broad jump, triple jump, 120 yard high-hurdles, 100 yard dash, 880 yard relay, 440 yard run, 180 yard low-hurdles, 440 yard relay, 880 yard run, mile medley relay, and the 220 yard dash. The Reynolds Rockets finish* ;d a distant second^to the vic torious Blue Devils with a total 3f 82Vt. points.
