Consolidated Income Before
Securities Gains or Losses
for the three months ending
March 31st, 1311, was $3,623,
574 compared with $2,479,
423 for the first quarter of
197$. On a per share basis,
this was equivalent to $1.60
for 1971, np from 68c in 1976.
The announcement was made
today by Ray N. Simmons,
City Executive in charge of
the Brevard office of First
Union National Bank.
Net Income After Securi
ties Gains or Losses for the
1971 period aggregated $3,
621,518 or $1.06 per share as
compared with $2,462,514 or
68c per share for the compar
able 1970 period. A signifi
cant portion of the increase
in income was contributed by
bond trading operations of
the company’s banking sub
sidiary, First Union National
Bank of North Carolina, and
the activities of certain non
banking subsidiaries.
Total assets of First Union
National Bancorp, Inc., were
$1*217,727, 744 as of March
31, 1971 as compared with
$1,090,184, 793 for 1970. Total

Sale Of US Savings Bonds
Reported Up During March
Series E United States Saving
Bond sales in North Carolina
during March amounted to $5,
372,997, an increase of more
than 9 per cent over sales in
March of last year.
Combined sales of both Series
E and H Bonds for March were
$5,477,497, a 4.6 per cent in
crease over last year.
January - March cumulative
sales amounted to $18,617,568,
the largest volume sold for any
comparable period since 1947,

and a 9.2 per cent increase over
1970 sales for the same period.
This represents 29.3 per cent of
the state’s 1971 dollar goal of
$63,600,000.
On May 1st, U. S. Savings
Bonds will be 30 years old.
More than $184 billion worth of
Bonds have been bought since
1941. And — since 1945—pur
chases have averaged $5 billion
a year. Those who buy (or are
given) Bonds hold onto them,
more than $53 billion worth.
Americans average $1,000 per
family in holdings. And they
earn more than $2 billion in
interest from their Bonds each
year.
Sales in Transylvania County
during March were $23,164.
January-March sales totaled
$77,850. This represents 27.6
per cent of the county’s goal of
$281,748, according to Jerry
Jerome, County Volunteer

Retired Postal Service Officer
Joins Melton Realty Company
Vernon W. Rlsher, a native
of Waterboro, 8. C., and a re
tired Postal Service Officer
has joined the local ttum of
Robert W. Melton Company,
Realtors, as a Sales Associate,
it was announced by R. W.
“Buddy” Melton last week.
Major Risher is also a retired
officer of the U. S. Marine
Corps Reserve.
A graduate of Savannah
High School, Savannah, Geor
gia, and Harris College,
Young Harris, Ga., Risher re*
tired from the Postal Service
on Sept, 30, 1970 as a Postal
Service Officer of the Atlanta
Regional Office. Before mov
ing to Brevard, his last home
was in Tampa, Florida, where
he was in charge of all post
offices, postal operations, and
postal transportation for Cen
tral Florida.
During 35 years of servici
with the Post Office, he was as
signed to various posts through
out the Southeast and in Wash
ington, D. C. He attended sev
eral management and employe*
relations courses in Washingtor
and at Oklahoma University.
He served as an officer In
the U. S. Marine Corps dur
ing World War II and the
Korean Conflict. He had ex
tensive service in the Pacific
Theatre. He retired from the
Marine Corps Reserve in 1962
with the rank of Major.
He is married to the former
Elinor Ruth Marshall of Co
lumbia, S. C. She taught school
in Georgia and Florida for
many years before the couple
came to North Carolina. They
have two married daughters.
The Rishers live in a home
on Rainbow Lake in the East
Fork Community, which had
been a summer home from
1964 until they settled here
permanently in 1979.
They are members of the
First United Methodist Church
of Brevard and the Glen Can
non Country Club.
Something Missing

ence at summer camp and his
parents could hardly wait for
