The annual Spring Four Ball Classic Golf tournament will be held this weekend at beautiful Glen Cannon Coun try club. The field will be limited to the first 72 teams, with an entry fee of $40 per team. A free practice round can be played anytime prior to May 15th. All teams must play in respective flights on May 16th. The course is in ideal con dition for the tournament, and the defending champions are “Tiger” Jordan and Tommy Carpenter. This is the sixth annual tournament, and it promises to be the biggest and best yet. LARRY BURCH L. W. “CHICK” MARTIN From the First Tee AT Glen Cannon Country Club by John Passriiore and Ken Gilburth i Spencer Walker, scored a hftle in one on Wed., May 5th, at Glen Cannon. He used a 5 wood on the 151-yard second hole. Walker was playing with Bob Daniels, Renus Rich and John Bailey. The Golf Course and Grounds Committee have certainly been active this season. The commit tee members include — Doyce Hunter, Gil Coan, Fred David son and Pete Wright. Following is a list of projects completed or scheduled: ★ Land exchanged with land company to widen fairway in front of number 13 tee and area between number 13 tee and area between number 13 green and num ber 14 fairway. ★ Number 16 fairway reno vated and seeded. Improve ments should reduce flood damage in future. ★ Number 10 fairway on green side of creek, repaired flood damage and seeded. ★ Pipe installed and ditch fill ed on south side of number 14 fairway—area seeded. ★ New ladies tee built on number 14. ★ Number 6 and 16 tees, trench drains installed. ★ All tees fertilized — some seeded. ★ One acre of Windsor grass planted in nursery. If 419 Bermuda does not satisfy" our needs on tees, this grass will be put oh tees. ★ Water line repaired to num ber 4 green and number 11 green. Water fountains, new fountains installed on 10 and 16 greens. ★ New bridge construction on i number 3 fairway. ★ Area north of number 12 fairway leveled and seeded. ★ Ditch in front of number 3 tee moved. Area leveled and seeded. ★ New guard rails, installed at number 3 tee. "Martin Remains As Director Of Athletics Brevard College has named one of its own graduates to be the new head basketball coach succeeding long-time head coach Leighton W. “Chick” Martin. Larry Burch, an all-time great as a player at Brevard in the mid-1960’s who has serv ed as Martin’s chief assistant and scout for the past three years, has been appointed head coach at the two-year Metho dist-related institution. Coach Martin, who has been Brevard’s head coach for the past 16 seasons, will remain as full time athletic director. He will also take on additional work in classroom instruction. Throughout his tenure as head coach at Brevard, Martin’s teams have always been a fac tor in determiningjhe Western Carolinas Junior College Con ference basketball champion. His teams have compiled an outstanding 240-172 overall record, including three WCJCC regular season championships, and have been overall regular season runners-up on another three occasions. His team of 1960-61 ad vanced to the National J-C Athletic Association tourna ment in Hutchinson, Kan., and finished the season ranked 13th nationally. The Tornadoes of 1963-64, paced by Burch’s brilliant play, also advanced to the national tournament at Hutchinson and were ranked ninth nationally at season’s end. “I’ll miss being on the bench,” Martin said when he announced his replacement, “But I’m most pleased with and seeded after May 15th. ★ Hope to have new trash re ceptacles on hand by June 1st. ★ Five new Harley-Davidson golf carts purchased to give a. fleet of 29 carts. ★ Harley-Davidson cart rental fleet will be on course for May 15-16 and October 2-3 for golf tournaments. ★ Will plant 419 Bermuda on several tees about 6-1-71. ★ Some 6,000 white pine seed lings have been planted in various areas of course. Some for ornamentals but most to take areas of course not used for golf play out of maintenance. ★ Ladies Golf Association are to begin project of landscap ing clubhouse area. Under his leadership, the bask etball program here at Brevard is bound to progress.” Burch also was pleased with the appointment. “I am extremely pleased with this appointment, and I feel most fortunate to have the op portunity to work in the ath letic program here at Brevard College,” he said. “I feel confident, after serving three years as assist ant under “Chick” Martin, that I can continue the qual ity and tradition of Brevard basketball that he has built. He has been an excellent teacher, coach and friend to me during five years that I have played and coached under his patient directon,” Burch said. The new Brevard head coach is a native of Waldron, Ind.,a graduate of Brevard College in 1965 and Western Carolina Uni versity in 1967. He received his MA degree from Western Caro lina in 1968 after serving as WCU’s freshman basketball coach under Jim Gudger in 1967-68. He returned to Brevard as Martin’s assistant in the fall of 1968, and has worked hard to help maintain the school's record of basketball excel lence here. to Dunlop’s advisory staff. Robertson Is The New Golf Pro At Sherwood Forest Ann S. Robertson, out standing professional golfer from Sarasota, Florida, is the new Pro at the Sherwood Forest Golf course. She has already assumed her duties at Sherwood. Mrs. Robertsons whose hus band, Richard N. Robertson, is managing editor of the Sara sota Herald, / and their two daughters, Katherine and Laurel, ages 17 and 14s have been coming to Transylvania for many years. They have a summer home in the Slick Rock section of the county. Mrs. Robertson has a long list of victories both as an amateur and as a profes sional golfer. She played her first major tournament, the Tampa Open, at the age of 15. She turned pro the first time in 1953 and played the Florida tour. Later she re tired to raise a family. In 1960, she got her amateur standing back to play in the state tournament When she was first an ama teur player, she was semi finalist in the Florida tourna ment in 1948 and 1950, and semi-finalist in the North-South tournament in 1950. She won the city champion ship of Bradenton on two oc casions, and in 1950, she was the city champion of Tampa. She has also been the club champion of Palma Ceia Coun try club and the Forest Hills Golf Course, both in Tampa. She has many plans for the Sherwood club this spring and summer. She plans to teach indi viduals and groups, and she is especially interested in teach ing juniors and helping the new golfer to start out right. She will be holding tourna ments throughout the spring and summer, with the first one •lated on May 29th and 30th. Mrs. Robertson is only teaching at the present time because of recent back surg ery, but she hopes to start playing about June 1st . The attractive Floridian can hold her own in the men’e league too. While an amateur, she had a handicap of two, playing from the men’s tees. She emphasizes that the tournaments that she will be holding will interest the average golfer as well as the better player. She cordially invites Tran sylvanians out to Sherwood Forest. “It’s a beautiful golf course and it’s in perfect condition,” she proudly told The Times. NCHSAA Regional Track Meet To Be Held Here This Friday The Brevard Blue Devils will be well represented in the big NCHSAA Regional Track Meet to be held here Friday on the Brevard Col lege track. The meet will feature some of the finest high school ath letes in the state competing here, including those from schools as far east as Greens boro. This will be the first time that the Regional Meet has ever been held here, and those qualifying will then move on to compete in the State Meet in Raleigh next week. The Blue Devils finished sec ond to the Asheville High Gia "In—&-.HC. SHERWOOD FOREST GOLF CLUB CEDAR MOUNTAIN, N. C. Tournament scheduled for May 29 and 30. They failed to place first in any single event, but strong second and third place finishes in most all events earned for them their fine sec ond place showing. Hendersonville’s Bearcats won Class I honors in the small school division', followed closely by East Henderson. In all, teams from 21 schools from WNC were entered in the Sectional here last Friday, and even more are expected to compete in the Regional Meet here this Friday.
