RECORD SIZE BROWN TROUT — E. M. Collins, of Rosman, is pictured with the beautiful brown trout that he caught last week in Tennessee Creek in Jackson County. The beauty was 26*4 inches long and weighed 6 pjunds. Mr. Collins admits that he had quite a battle in landing the ‘‘whopper'’ in about 20 minutes. (Times Staff Photo) Sapphire-Whitewater Library To Open Thursday Afternoons By - Wallace Brewer SAPPHIRE - WHITEWATER —Mrs. Betty Blair, Sapphire Whitewater Community De velopment club librarian, an nounced that the library will be held open each Thursday after noon beginning May 20th from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. The young and elderly are invited to participate in this library service. A bridal shower honoring Di anne Gillespie, bride-elect of Gary Hall of Lake Toxaway, was given at the home of Mrs. R. W. Gillespie of Leicester. Those attending were: Mrs. Lyle McCoy, Mrs. Linda Hold en, Mrs. Gaye Willix, Mrs. S. B. Hall and daughter, Revonda of ; Lake Toxaway. The bricfe elect received many lovely gifts. Harriett and Mirial Baird of Sarasota, spent several days at their summer home at “Creek side”. They added a new porch while here. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Home, of Sarasota and Sapphire, are busy preparing their garden on “Chipmonk Lane”. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pemel man, of Bradenton, Fla;, have arrived at Sapphire for their summer vacation. Sunday evening callers of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle McCoy of Bearwallow Drive were Gaye Willix and family, Linda Hold en and children, Gary Hall and Dianne Gillespie, and Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Lee, of Franklin. Mrs. Betty Blair spent last week visiting her granddaugh ter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allen, of Savannah, Ga. Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Condon, who spent the winter in Mel bourne, Fla., are spending the summer at their residence on Whitewater road. The Erik Hansens and Miss Cindi Rock were the guests of the elder Hansen’s godchild and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Merritt, of Taylors, S. C. on Sunday. Robert Pemelman assisted Bert Brooks on completion of the latter’s new home on Bear wallow Drive on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence E. Denslow of Enterprise, Florida, spent several days at their cot tage at No. 2 Springs Drive last week arranging for new water system at their several cottages in Sapphire. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Avery, also of Enter prise, were their guests. Iric and Linda Thomas and daughter, Michelle were Sun day afternoon guests of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Bryant at Salem, S. C. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bryant, of Walhalla, S. C., were Sunday visitors of their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lusk and children. Lynn Field Youth baseball here got underway last, week with large crowds in attendance at each evening’s double head ers. In the Minor League, a new team, the Giants jumped off to a good start with impressive wins over the other two expan sion teams, the Yankees and the Tigers. In other first week action, the Braves outlasted the Red Sox in a real slugfest 18-16, while the Cardinals clipped the Panthers 94. In the Little League, the Red Sox whipped the Colts in the season opener, while later in the week the Braves took the Mets and the Panthers edged the Cubs. Two games were rained out, those between the Cardinals and the Pirates and the Colts vs. the Mets, and these will be played as soon as pos sible. Little League and Minor League games are played each evening except Wednes day beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the E. L. Lynn field directly behind Pisgah Forest ele mentary schooL Refreshments are available^ and there is no admission charge for the games. The public is encouraged to come down and spend an enjoyable evening, watching these stars of the future per form, and support this most worthwhile youth program here. Nelson Makes State Finals In Discus Gary Nelson will be Bre vard’s lone representative in the big NCHSAA state track meet finals ini Raleigh this weekend. State finalists were determin ed here on the Brevard College track last Friday when 69 high schools sent teams here to com pete in the state regional meet. In that meet, schools from as far east as Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem and Reidsville competed here, with Charlotte Myers Park winning Class II honors and Hendersonville walking off with the Class I crown. Nelson placed fourth here in the discus to qualify for the state finals in that event. Over 250 of the finest high school athletes in the state were on hand here to compete in the regional meet, but only a select few made the finals to Raleigh this weekend. Only the first four finishers in each event made the finals. The unemployment , insur ance system observed its 35th anniversary in 1970, and cross ed the $50 billion mark in pay ment of regular benefits to un employed workers. SANFORD—Brevard Junior College turned in a 626 for 36-holes at Quail Ridge Coun try Club near here Tuesday to win the Region 10 Junior College golf championship. The victorious Tornadoes, second place finishers behind Spartanburg in the Western Carolinas Junior College Golf Tournament at Etowah last week, earned a trip to Flint, Mich., for the National Junior College Golf Tournament, June 8-11. Don Dickey led the victors with a 76-77-153. Rounding out the winning team and earning places in the national were Tiger Jordan, Jimmy Martin, Tommy Carpenter and Marvin Davis. Bob Henry of Chowan Col lege was the medalist here with a 151. The team scores were — Brevard 626, Spartanburg 633, Chowan 635, Mt. Olive 649, and Isothermal and Le noir Community College no Scores. Running against the world’s finest milers in what was billed as the “mile of the century”, McAfee ran the mile in exactly four minutes flat to place fourth behind world record holders Marty Liquori of Villanova, Jim Ryan of Kansas, and unattached Byron Dyce. Liquori and Ryan both ran the fastest mile ever run in the Eastern U.S. in 3:54.6, with Liquori barely edging Ryan for the win. Dyce edged McAfee by a step to fin ish third in 3:59.6. Stewart finished fifth in the half mile, running it in 1:49.8. Favored Mark Winzenreid of Wisconsin won the event in 1:48 even.
