(Times Staff Photo) Mrs. Herman White Kindergarten, Day Care Teacher Retires After 25 Years Of Service uy • ui carpenter A lady who has taught a whole generation of Brevard youngsters retired last month. But she leaves the re sults of her work well pre served in the hearts of par ents and children all over the community. She is Mrs. Herman White, who has for 25 years operated a private Kindergarten and Day Care Center. “Mrs. White instilled in all the children a love of God and country and community such as no one else ever has,” says Mrs. Edward B. Hina. “She has many friends among the parents and the children themselves. We shall never forget her.” ' Started In 1946 i Mrs. White received a silver tray from the parents of this year’s, her last; class at the rjaek and Jill Kindergarten and Day Care Center in a small ceremony on Friday, May 21. The present recognized her 25 years of service to the children of itrevard which began in 1946. In that year, Mrs. White and her husband, Herman R. White, were living on the Brevard College campus where Mr. White was Super intendent of Buildings and Grounds. “We lived on the campus eight years,” says Mrs. White, “and there I began taking care of the professors’ children. Soon others found I was will ing to work with the children instead of just baby sitting, and they began bringing young sters to me for care. “We moved from the campus in 1955 when Mr. White took a job at Mars nill College. We moved into a house on Country Club Road and I stayed here while he worked at Mars Hill. That year I had a class of 18- chil- , dren. t *• “After one year at that loca tion, we moved again to ,226 Park View Drive. I’Ve operated the Jack and Jill Kindergarten and Dav Care Center there un til now,” she said. She was born in Elizabeth City, and after public school there and graduation from Eastern Carolina State Univer sity in 1926, she taught the first grade in Pasquotank Country schools for 6 years. After that, she and Mr. White lived in East Northfield, Mass., for 15 years where he was connected with the D. L. Moody Bible School. The Whites camp to Bre vard in 1946 because Mr. White had attended the old Brevard Institute, forerunner of Brevard College, in t.he early 1920’s. He had liked Brevard, so they came to Western North Carolina to stay. Mr. White is now semi-re tired but serves as Superin tendent' -of Buildings and Grounds for the Brevard First United Methodi f. Church. Mr. and Mrs. White have two children: a daughter, ' Mrs. Charles Gibbons of Swannanoa and George Her man White of New Orleans, La. Retirement Plans Retirement - plans? Mrs. White says she intends to con tinue'living at their home ar.d be of service to the cpmmunity. A 19 year-old Brevard man will help stage this summer’s production of “The Common Glory,” Virginia’s outdoor drama of the American Revolu tion. Thomas M. Cox, the son of Mrs. James Cox, 106 Robinson Road, Brevard, will be an as sistant lighting technician for the 24th annual production of the symphonic drama. Mr. Cox, who is a light de signer at Brevard College, was a lighting technician for Ker mit Hunter’s outdoor drama, I “Unto These Hills.” “The Common Glory,” which opens June 24th in the Lake Matoaka Amphitheatre on the campus of the College of Wil liam and Mary, is the moving story of Thomas Jefferson dur ing the War for Independence. Nearly two million persons have seen the patriotic drama. ‘The Common Glory” is pro duced by the Jamestown Corp., an educational nonprofit or ganization, and was written by Paul Green, a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for drama. The play will be given nightly, ex cept Sundays, through Aug. 28. Education Board To Meet Monday The regular monthly meet ing of the Transylvania Coun ty Board of Education will be held Monday night, June 7th, at 8:00 p. m .in the Education Center, West Main Street.
