Brevard Music Center To
Open 35th Season July 2
Hrevara music Center be
gins its 35th season here
July 2nd with 40 different
performances scheduled for
this summer. The season
ends Aug. 15th.
Most area music lovers know
the Brevard Music Center as a
mecca for the performing arts.
At Brevard Festival weekends
during July and August they
see and hear polished perform
ances by renowned guest solo
ists, stunning opera produc
tions, lilting musical comedies
plus a potpourri of art exhibi
tions, dance recitals and re
lated arts activities.
But as professional as all
BMC performances are, pro
fessionalism is not arrived at
easily. Long years of study and
practice are required, and be
hind every memorable sym
phonic performance or opera
staging there are innumerable
hours of study and practice,
practice, practice.
First and foremost, the
Music Center is an educa
tional institution. Each sum
mer, 300 of the best of the na
tion’s student musicians come
here to study and learn
under some of the best pro
fessional musicians anywhere.
For every three students
there is one teacher, and this
unique ratio provides the in
spiration and guidance that
stimulate the student toward
professionalism.
All day long at the Music
Center students study and prac
tice; sometimes in groups,
sometimes along with their in
struments. In their dormitories,
in private practice huts and
sometimes just under a seclud
ed tree in the woods or by a
woodland stream, they work to
make beautiful music for the
performance coming up soon.
The Brevard Spirit also mani
fests itself on alumni weekend.
On one weekend each year ex
students, campers and faculty
members get together on the
well-loved grounds and remi
nisce about the “old days” at
the Music Center. This year
they’ll gather July 16-18 and,
frftn the more than 10,000
alumni scattered all over the
country, many will return to
the green woods of Transyl
vania to recapture those happy
and valuable days of the past.
This season’s schedule in
cludes presentations of op
eras such as “Pagliacci” and
“Lucia Di Lammermoor”; an
operatta, “H. H. S. Pinafore”;
a musical comedy, “The
Music Man”; a chamber
music series on Monday
nights by the Center faculty;
free student recitals at 4:30
p.m. os Thursday afternoons,
beginning J'-'ty 15th; “Pops”
concerts; and the Sunday
afternoon concerts at 3:30
p.m., featuring guest artists

Vito and others.
All evening performances be
gin at 8:15 p.m. Season tickets

Little Items of Lively Interest About Folks and
KING
By Mrs. S. R. Harrington
Let us go where the hills are
Singing
And the mountains are echoing
back,
Where lakes that are tranquil
and hidden
Lure us on up the winding
track;
Where the joys of the summer
await us
On the trail that is rugged and
high,
As we strive for the height of
a mountain,
For the uppermost blue of the
sky!
—Burgess
It is the glad summertime!
Days of flowers, sunshine and
blue skies. A time of beautiful
blossoms in garden, along road
sides, lakes and on majectic
mountains. It is a time of free
dom and joyousness. The world
glows with a beauty that
breathes of peace.
Summertime brings the
blooms of Exotic Japanese
Irises. Yes, the unfolding pagen
try of the most magnificent of
all iris. Their blooms are huge
in the doubles, sometimes
measuring ten to twelve inches.
Their colors seem to be all
manner of blues, purples, or
chid, pinks, lovely whites, and
a great variety of mottlings,
speeklings and stripplings. The
singles are also a joy in the
garden.
Some call them Japanese iris.
Some say Oriental, while others
call them Kaempferi or Higo.
All the names are correct, but
you can’t go wrong saying
Japanese, for they are truly
from Japan.
Plant them in late August
or early September here .in
the mountains so that plenty of
root growth will occur before

winter. Mulch with well rotted
oak leaves.
As for their culture: They
require abundant moisture dur
ing their spring growing sea
son. They need an acid soil.
(And avoid any soil that has
lime). They cannot tolerate
lime at all.
They are readily grown from
seed, and this is really a de
light, for what you get is such
a pleasant surprise.
db^itay Softie plants to start
with. Gorgeous named ones are
on the market such as Gold
Bound, a pure white with gold
bands . . . Kagari Bi is a de
lightful rose pink . . . Delft
Blue is the darling of the lot.
There- are many other nice
ones.
Summer brings many chores
in the garden. There’s the ever
present weeds to cope with.
Mulch as much as possible to
keep them down, and in some
areas a weed killer might be
used—very carefully.
Azaleas and Rhododendrons
are making buds now for next
year’s bloom—so keep watered
or the bloom buds will die.
July is time to take cuttings
of Azaleas, etc., for rooting.
Take cuttings after a soaking
rain, and early in the morning
when they’re really crispy
fresh.. Have the sprouting
medium are ready before tak
ing the cuttings.
Place orders for the German
(Bearded) Irises now. Also for
the Dwarfs; the Spuria; the
Sibirica, and especially the
Dwarfs or Pumila. Most of
these flower both in spring and
fall.
Flower Focus on Mr. and
Mrs. Eugene Tinsley’s magnifi
cent collection of Japanese iris
at 67 Carolina avenue.
On the Emmett K. McLarty
Remembrance garden at Bre
vard College with a beautiful
arral of flowers.
On the lovely flower boxes
along the streets in Brevard
planted by The Transylvania
Council of Garden Clpbs.
On the riot of colorful flow
ers grown by Mrs. Walker
Millner at 402 E. French Broad
street.
On the mammoth Jack-in the
pulpit at Mr. and Mrs. Lewis
Waldrop’s, Rosman. It is truly
spectacular.
Have a safe, happy Fourth of
July, Everyone!
