Pops Concert Highlights The Weekend, Music Center 'Continued From Page One) able is that he has achieved this success while an honor student at Harvard, from which he was a cum laude graduate last year. Buswell recently returned from Gian Carlo Menotti’s Fes tival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy where he was in charge of the Chamber Music Section. For debut on the Brevard stage, he has elected to attack the rhythmically exciting but tech nically demanding and difficult “Symphonic Espagnole” by Lalo. The Transylvania Sym pony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Emil Raab will as sist young Buswell and also play Mendelssohn’s “Ruy Bias Overture” and the Tchaikovsky “Third Symphony”. This mati nee performance will begin at 3:30 on Sunday. Friday night’s opera “Lucia di Lammermoor” stars Metro politan soprano Loretta Di Franco in the title role. Her appearance here at the Music Center is the first for Miss Di Franco, who demolished a Metropolitan tradition by becoming the first person in the history of the company to rise from the chorns to solo artist stature. Also appearing in the produc tion are two of the Opera Work shop’s resident singers, Bari tone Perry Daniels as Lord Ash ton and Tennor William Mc Donald as Sir Edgar. Staged by John Richards McCraev the opera orchestra will be conduct ed by BMC Director Henry Janiec. Of all the programs at the Brevard Music Center, none finds more favor with Tran sylvania audiences than the series of Pops Concerts, which provide something for the whole family, serious - music lovers and just plain folks alike. The first in the series this year is guaranteed to bridge the gap between the Geritol and Pepsi Gene rations with its adroit mix ture of music from Broadway shows, the movies and the world pop records. Saturday night’s program is strong on variety, with hits from such shows as “Fiddler on the Roof’, “Mame”, and even the controversial tribal love rock musical “Hair”. Also on the program are lush orchestral arrangements from the movies “Dr. Zhivago” and “Exodus”. Sure to please local audiences, a medley of Jim Webb songs is also included and features hits like “Up, Up and Away”. Other recording bestsellers round out the program. The evening ends with Conductor Henry Janiec leading the BMC Orchestra through the stirring patriotic salute “From Sea to Shining Sea”. While the Weekend Festi val concerts and productions are always the highlight of the Brevard schedule, each more and more music lovers are discovering the less cost ly but no less accomplished weeknight concerts presented by richly talented faculty and students of the Music Center. Monday night Connoisseur Concerts appeal especially to the romantics. Tuesday and Wednesday night concerts feature the Transylvania Con cert Band and the Wind En semble.
