Brevard Junior Police League
Is Now Active And Is Growing
The Theme: Recreation And
Guidance, Not Law Enforcement
A new youth organization whose purpose
is to help curb the increasing rise of delin
quency in the area and establish a better re
lationship between youth and law enforcement
is now active in Brevard and growing rapidly.
It is the Brevard Junior Police League, which
was begun in March 1971 with 42 boys enroll
ed and is now being expanded to accept 30
more.' ' ..
The purpose of the organization is to pro
vide supervised group recreation, guidance, and
information on law enforcement activities for
boys between the ages of 10 and 18. Its activi
ties will include familiarization with law en
forcement officers’ duties, but members will not
be used for police work in any manner.
PLANNED IN 1970
Planning for the League began in July
1970 when Brevard Police Chief, J. C. Rowe,
Police officers Jim Leopard. Everette S1;*T'
man. and Hubert Bi-own met with Tran-yl
vania County Social Services Director, Mrs.
Edith Jenkins and Social Workers Mrs. Louise
Stroup and Mrs. Pat Galloway. Planning
continued for several months with distribu
tion of applications for membership beginning
in February, 1971.
Boys in the area responded enthusias
tically, particularly thow between the ages
of 10 and 15. and the first meeting was held
in March, 1971.
ACTIVITIES VARIED
Activities of the League have been
varied. Officers Leopard and Shipman and
Deputy Sheriff Brown have alternated con
ducting meetings. They have demonstrated
the use of police equipment, taught nrecision
drilling and camping procedures. Chief Rowe
has conducted a course in first-aid and Officer
Jchnny Morgan has demonstrated judo.
Recreational activities have included go
ing to the movievS and the carnival. A morning
was spent at the Transylvania County Law En
forcement Association Camp on the Crab Creek
Road in Henderson County, and the League re
cently returned there for a three-dav camping
trip Jure 12-14. Accompanied by Officer Ship
man and Deputy Brown, the boys fished, swam,
hiked, practiced drilling and enjoyed a variety
of activities. , ;
MORE ACTIVITIES ADDED
With 30 more members being accented
from the Jbackloe of applications on a first
come ban*, previous activities will be con
tinued and new ones added. Instruction and
practice in the safetv and use of firearms will
he taught. A precision drill team will be se
lected for appearance in parades in the area.
Each boy will ride in a patrol car with an
officer while on duty. However, League mem
will not be taken to any hazardous situ
all economic classes can participate. Money
received has been used for recreational fees,
tents and sleeping bags, and food for the
camping trip. The boys are eager to have uni
forms, but funds for these have not yet be
come available.
The League is in need of financial support
for the remainder of the year and for volun
teers to assist during the meetings. Anyone
wishing to contribute either time or funds can

There are several pests that
often invade the home, espec

of these include the Sawtooth
ed Grain Beetle, the Red
Flour Beetle, the Bean Wee

Indian Meal Moth, and the
Rice Weevil. The best way to
control the pests is to seal off

The two chemicals that have
been approved for use in the
