Opera "Don Pasquale" Provides
Excitement At The Music Center
By • Bob Brown
“Don Pasquale” opened the
Brevard Opera season with
more excitement than any
other opening has ever pro
vided.
First, the costumes did not
arrive on schedule. John Mc
Crae, Producer - Director, was
advised that the truck carry
ing them had been hi-jacked as
it left New York, and there was
r,o assurance that the garments
would ever get to Brevard.
They arrived just in time
for the dress rehearsal Thurs
day, in good condition.
Then, something happened to
the voice of Pasquale, which
was the voice of David Rae
Smith. When iVrived for the
dress rehearsal McCrae was al
most out of his mind.
“Bob, I don’t have my Pas
quale”, he said as his greeting to
me.
Smith had suffered an at
tack of laryngitis. His voice, us
ually booming and magnificent,
was reduced to a whisper. A
doctor assured him he would be
able to sing by Saturday night,
the time of the performance.
McCrae provided the audi
ence with something very rare
in opera. He sat in the wings,
score in hand, and sang the
words for Pasquale, as Smith
went through the motions. And
so realistic was it that it was
difficult to tell whether the
voice was coming from Smith
or McCrae.
Smith made his actions to
perfection, his mobile face
showing all the necessary emo
tions from high hilarity to
deep respair. Then, on Satur
day, he was able to sing.
All of the performers in
the opera were up to the
usually high standards main
tained in the Brevard operas.
Jane Frazier Rolandi was her
charming self as the heroine,
Perry Daniels was Dr. Mala
testa, and William McDonald
was Ernesto. A special bou
quet goes to Ross Magulas,
for his role as the notary.
The role is small, but. Mag
oulas is a master of opera
tic comedy.
The people in the support
ing roles, servants, maids,
cooks, ets, showed proficiency.
One of them, Carol Coker,
should be watched. She has
stage presence, congeniality,
originality, animation, emotion,
vivaciousness, and apparently a
great love for the operatic
stage.
We look forward to hearing
her solo voice in the opera
“Unicorn in the Garden”,
July 16th. She shows prom,
ise of being a great star some
day. Right now she is only
a high school student in
Spartanburg.
