The Cleveland County home maker has had such a work area for about a year, Thelma E. McVea, home economics exten sion agent, says. The work area was formerly a back porch. Using knowledge acquired through participation in Exten sion Homemakers Club activi ties, Mrs. Smith helped draw the plans converting the porch to a work area. She also salvaged an old kitchen sink and built a cabi net under it Mrs. Smith paint ed the new cabinet and re enameled the outside of a used refrigerator. The neat, attractive and ef ficient room is one the home maker will use often with the canning and freezing season now in full sewing, the agent adds. Help In Housing Many low - income families, enrolled in the Expanded Nu trition Education Program, need help in areas other than foods and nutrition, too. Extension program aides have primary duty in foods, but they often refer family men bers to other agencies or indi viduals in the community that can help them with other prob lems. Mrs. Agnes Watts, home eco nomics extension agent, Alex ander County, has helped sev eral such families with housing. One family wanted an in door bathroom. Mrs. Watts drew a suggested diagram for the installation of the bathroom fixtures and also advised the family to contact the county canitarian for information on septic tanks. Another homemaker wanted a kitchen cabinet for conveni ent working surface and stor- . age. Extension workers showed I the woman a diagram of a i large storage cabinet and the homemaker found her hus band could build a similar unit from an old sink. For a third family, owning its own home, was a life-long goal. The family owned land and could possibly be eligible for an FHA or HUD loan. Ex- • tension agents discussed hous ing loans and house plans with family members. R. Harrington The garden Is the rustle of unseen things, The silent flutter of butter flies’ wings: It's a place of still, enchanted hours. Of fragrance, peace, unfolding flowers And the drowsy sound of hum ming BEES. Yet, A garden is more thin all of these .... For here we find that God is walking, Here in a garden God is talking, > Talking sublimely without any words In the murmur of trees and the song of birds. —Humphreys Flowers are so beautiful . . . I stand and study them and wish desperately I could under stand the miracle before me. Here from tiny seeds, .... all this loveliness .... colors too exquisite to describe. . . . each fashioned differently by the master designer! Summer brings many Garden ing Chores. Vacations are in full swing, and many garden ers who are not away* probab ly wish they were! Yet, those who are really enthusiastic gardeners love each minute — even the hard work. Divide and replant the Ger man bearded irises, if needed. Also the Louisiana, the Dwarfs, the Siberian, Etc. (if you haven’t already). Daylilies can be divided and reset now if they are too thick. Peony orders, as well as irises, daylilies and other per ennials, should be off to the growers now. Each will be mailed to you at the correct planting time. (Many of these things are available at local nurseries.) Softwood cuttings of Azaleas and other shrubs may be made now. Tip cuttings root readily in boxes of sand. Of course, a rooting hormone always helps. Keep Azaleas well watered and milched as protection against excessive sumrmer heat. (Remember we still have hot August and September ahead, and so far the rains have been ample). Fertilize your lawn in late August. You’ll find feeding at this time results in good roots and a greatly thickened top. —Turn to Page Eight LAKE TOXAWAY COUNTRY CLUB Dining Room Open Daily 6:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. PRO SHOP GRILL Open Daily 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Golf • New Carts STATE THEATRE OF NORTH CAROLINA FLAT ROCK PLAYHOUSE* 41st Season Opens Tuesday U.S. 25, 3 miles south of Hendersonville The Famous Vagabond Players “SPOFFORD” Comedy MUST For The Whole Family AUGUST 3 — AUGUST 7 Tues. thru Sat 8:30 — Wed. & Sat 2:30 Regular Prices: $3.00 and $2.50 Fri & Sat Eves.: $3.50 & $3.00 Children: $1.00 at Matinees Res: Box Office, Hendersonville 692-2281 GOING TO THE x'*;‘ Sponsor v '\ TO BE HELD
