L»'l '• May Costs 10*% Penalty . ■ . ■ Mi — Transylvania's fbx Collector §tes Regulations the N. C. property owner trying to digest the "Mate’s complex new tax law there’s a very simple, baste message: you’re going to have • to piy the tax you’re assess t ed and pay it on time. Either : that or be faced with a whop | ping interest charge. {’ It is part of a major effort • designed to help govern ; mental units that relv upon • the property tax realise the • maximum benefit from that ■ source of income. **v - mrti Him niWlaiTi ** -• i The state’s new tax law. ; adopted by the General Assem * bly along the lines recommend ' ed by a study commission after ; two years of work, represents the most significant charges at : one time ever made by N. C. It’s a complex statute—the . commission’s report and ex ■ planation is an inch and a > } half thick — that focuses ■ sharply on tile delinquent • taxpaver. The guy who ha bitually pays promptly needs concern himself only with , » data changes, something hell ; have to watch until he be - comes accustomed to them. Otherwise he’ll be subjected 1 ; -to-'Tfw, higher interest charges. Property owners who are de linquent in tax payments for \ one year, as an example now l must pay 10 1/4 per cent inter im est plus the principal. That’s > 4 1/4 per cent more than the 6 f per cent rate previously charg i ed. I But yon don’t have to wait J a year for the new tax law to i apply; it's currently in effect J said there are immediate eon In summarv, property taxes are due earlier this year and will be every year hereafter, penalties are higher for late payment all across the board, and will be instituted sooner. There , are also no excep tions. The tax bill is uniform statewide; there are no spe cial bills for individual coun ties. 'i ' Property taxes hereafter are f due and payable on September 1 1 of the year in which they are r listed. Previously they were not *' due until the first Monday of - October of the year in which 3 listed. r The January month of grace i is now gone. Penalties for late * payment now go into effect on * January 1, instead of February 5 1 as in the past. They’re also l higher; a two per cent penalty will be charged the first month I twice as much as had been : charged. ■ An additional three-quarters . of a per cent will be added * every month thereafter, 50 l per cent more than the old ; additional monthly charge. The new timetable poses an : immediate problem for the 'Transylvania County tax office, ■already working against this year’s revaluation. Tax bills tra ditionally have been mailed to Transylvania property owners in October. The office is now behind schedule, but it won’t change the fact that bills are doe and payable September 1. Tenon Follbright, tax col | lector, said tax hills for this - Discounts for early payment 'will be allowed this year, but Ibey may not in the future. The ^discount rate for 1971 has not Jbeen changed- You can still de duct \Vz per cent if your 1971 jjill is paid during July 1, per Tent if paid during August or September, and Vt per cent if paid during October. ?
