(Times Staff Photo) 4-H Congress A delegation of 16 4-H mem bers from Transylvania Coun ty are at North Carolina 4-H Congress In Raleigh this week. The Transylvania County delegates are among some 1, 400 club members, leaders and Extension agents participating in the annual four - day pro gram which began Monday on the North Carolina State Uni versity campus. The piugram consists of rec reation, discussions, competi tion, election of state officers and a lot of fellowship. “North Carolina 4-H Congress offers an excellent opportuni ty for personal growth and de velopment,” comments Dr. Chester Black, state 4-H leader. “It is an event that 4-H’crs look forward to each year with great anticipation,” he added. During the week, state win ners are determined in some 30 demonstration programs and various judging activities. Among the events in which Transylvania County 4-H’ers are participating are Public . ""ISI Speaking finals for state com petition. Members of the Transylvania County delegation attending are: Butch Hunter, Joan Adams, Marie Hooper, Tommy Hooper, Anita Winchester, Beth Bur dette, Gail McNeely, Patricia Barclay, David Holden, Rhonda Allison, John Summey, and Frank Summey. Accompanying them are Mrs. W. G. Hooper, Sr., of the Cherryfield Com munity, and Dennis Winters, Assisting Agricultural Exten sion Agent. To Jack Mass And Son Carr Builders Supply Sold To Florida Men For the first time since l; 1912, Pisgah Forest will be « without a Carr lumber busi ness of some kind because Frank Carr has sold Carr Builders’ Supply, Inc. The last of the several lum ber interests of the Carr fami ly, which began with the founding of the Carr Lumber Company by Louis Carr when he bought the timber rights to 70,000 acres in what is now Pisgah National Forest, has now ended with the retirement of Frank Carr. The new owner, Jack Mass _ and Son, now Brevard resi- ( dents and formerly of Miami, j Florida, will continue opera- t tion in the same building af ter renovation, new stock ing and a new opening, wich will take place in 30 to 60 days. Mr. Mass is a Pennsylvania native who grew up in Florida. He was in the building supply business there for 25 years be fore coming to Brevard. Now retired, he plans for the build ing supply to be operated by his son, Chips Mass, who will be moved here from Miami soon. Says Frank Carr, regard ing the sale: “I want to thank the many customers and the people who have worked for the Carr lumber interests. The backbone of all these ac tivities has been our faithful customers and employees— t.heir children and their grandchildren. At one time, the Carr Lum ber Mill at Pisgah Forest sawed from 30 to 100,000 board feet a day. The lumber was cut from 70,000 acres of mountain land in what is now Pisgah Forest; land which belonged to George Vander bilt from whom Louis Carr bought the timber rights for 30 years in 1912. The timber was reached by 75 miles of private railroad. Frank Carr’s first busines: ’as the Pisgah Builders Sup iy, which he sold in 1955. Mr. Mass, who is married to Eastern North Carolina born Jean Watts Mass, has been a visitor to North Caro lina for many years. He plans to reside in his new home which is now building in Glen Cannon in partial re tirement while his son Chips Mass operates the builders supply business. Asked what he plans to do in retirement, the civic-active Frank Carr says: “I’ve not really made up my mind. First, I plan to rest a month or two, then take a trip out to the Southwest.
