She recreates her most heralded role of Azucena in this Friday’s production. For male leads the Music Center raided the roster of the New York City Opera Company for tenor Harry Theyard and baritone Vem Shinall. Shinall, who is being called the baritone of the fu ture, is remembered for his interpretation of Tonio in “PagHacei” earlier this sea son. His success caused quite a stir in the Brevard area and has stimulated interest in this larger role. Tenor They ard came to opera through the route of musical comedy. While studying in Manhatten he took roles in Broadway shows, including “Man of La Mancha.” Now fully establish ed as an operatic presence, he sings with companies in Chicago and San Francisco in addition to duties with the New York City Opera. In one week his work was critically compared to Caruso and Corelli, which is not bad com pany for an up-and-coming tenor to keep. “II Trovatore” is staged by John Richards McCrae and conducted by Dr. Janiec. Other roles in the production are sung by members of the resident company, including Elaine Lin stedt as Inez. Curtain time is 8:15 p.m. Brevard audiences can look forward to another great pops concert this weekend when Hie Music Center presents the best of Lerner and Loewe. SOPRANO MARILYN HORNE’S PERFOR MANCE at the Music Center on Sunday afternoon will be a major musical event. Of all the stars presented at the Center, none has ever been enjoy ing more international popularity, prestige and success at the time of appearance than is Miss Horne right now. Hailed as one of the greatest voices of the ,20th Century, Marilyn Horne is at the peak of her career, ranked with Birgit Nilsson and Joan Sutherland at the very top of the operatic ladder. Concert time is 3:30 p. m. the hit songs of the fabulous team of Alan Jay Lerner and Fritz Loewe. Each Broadway show of theirs has yielded a fistful of hit tunes, many of which have gone on to be come standards. Their crown ing achievement is the legen dary “My Fair Lady,” which was successfully produced a few seasons back at the Music Center. Returning for the pops concert, to recreate her role as Eliza in a concert ver sion of the niasterwork is Janice Janiec, fresh from her starring role in last week end’s success, “The Music Man.” Another treat of the evening is a rare appearance by John Richards McCrae, mentor of the Opera Workshop and a talent of considerable operatic achievement. The Transyl vania Concert Band and Wind Ensemble under conductor Robert Barr has chosen for its final offering “Elsa’s Pro cession to the Cathedral” by Wagner, Hhsa’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “Music for Prague, 1969” and “Jericho” by Morton Gould. The second half of Tuesday night’s pro gram sees the Transylvania Youth Orchestra under Mario Mancinelli performing high lights from “Oklahoma,” two 17th century Dutch Tunes, the first, movement of Boro din’s “Symphony Number 2” and Handel’s “Concerto Gros so for Strings,” Wednesday night, maestro Emil Raab and the Transylvaftia Symphony Orchestra assist se lect Music Center students in the annual Concerto Concert, this year to feature the Center’s best young talent in perform ance on piano, trombone, trum pet and flute.
