Transylvania 4C Board To Have Two Special Meetings The Board of the Transylvania County Coordinated Child Care (4C) Program will meet at 7:30 p. m. on August 17th at the First United Methodist Church in Brevard. At that time the Board will make needed preparations for a meeting with the State Interagency Commit Science for You bob browt 1 - ' PROBLEM: Sodium light. NEEDED: Alcohol, salt, a jar lid, a match, a large pan or board, different colored objects. DO THIS: Put some salt into the lid, then pour alco hol into it. Light the alcohol,, turn out the lights so the room is dark, then sprinkle salt down into the flame. Look at the different objects. WHAT HAPPENS: The yellow flame produced by the salt contains very few of the normal colors in light. Therefore, objects cannot reflect their true colors. Rubbing alcohol is not good for this. The author tried methyl alcohol (wood alcohol), and a red box look ed black. Fuel alcohol works, and its flame made the red box show as yellow. The difference is in the chemicals in the alcohol itself which add their colors to the flame. A pure sodium flame, from the sodium in the salt, would be pure yellow, with no other colors. This special “Science For Ton” feature Is sponsored by Olin Corporation at Pisgah Forest In co-operation with The Transylvania Times. tee on August 19th. Preparations will include the following: 1) To adopt a slid ing scale for use in the 4C Program, when additional funds are received 2) To adopt a personnel policy 3) To discuss and understand the amend ments that have been made of the proposal to the Appalachian Regional Commission for pre school centers in the county. The First United Methodist Church will also be the site for the meeting on August 19th. It will begin at 9:30 a. m., and will be attended by a repre sentative of the State Depart ments of Health, Mental Health, Education, Social Services and Local Affairs, along with a representative of the Appala chian Regional Commission. These persons are making the visit in order to meet and talk with Board members and in terested persons of the 4C Pro gram. The public is eordially in vited to attend both meetings.
