Dr. Tyson Is Named To Head
Local Cystic Fibrosis Drive
Dr. James Tyson of Brevard,
has been appointed chairman
for the Transylvania Co. Cystic
Fibrosis Research Foundation
Breath of Life Campaign. The
announcement was made today,
by Mrs. Robert B. (Katie) Mor
gan, State Honorary Chairman
of Lillington.
In making the announcement,
Mrs. Morgan said, “We are
pleased to have Dr. Tyson join
the thousands of other volun
teers in North Carolina to help
bring about a better control of
cystic fibrosis and other chil
dren’s lung diseases by collect
ing funds so vital for continued
research at Duke Cystic Fib
rosis Center,'one of the 110
major medical research centers
in our country supported by the
National Foundation.”
Cystic Fibrosis, a pulmonary
gastro-intestinal disease, is pro
duced by a recessive g*ne which
causes the body to produce ab
normally salty sweat and a
thick, gluey mucus that clogs
the air passages and interferes
with digestion. When two car
riers of cystic fibrasis marry,
chances of producing a child
with C/F is 1 in 4 births. Thus,
C/F is found about 1 in 1000
births.
There is no cure and no test
for determining a C/F carrier
at this time. Symptoms may in
clude persistent cough, rapid
breathing, and sometimes
wheezing; aim bulky diarrhea,
failure of the child to gain
weight despite excellent appe
tite, and “pot bellv.” The child
may appear to be suffering
from asthma, bronchitis, celiac
disease, or an allergy. Cystic
fibrosis ranks second to cancer
as a taker of young life.
The foundation now has ex
panded its program to include
research for other chronic lung
damaging diseases as well as the
incurable and inherited disease
cjhtic fibrosis. Children suffer

asthma with lung damage, bron.
chiectasis, and childhood em
