' So let’s get this out of the way first. It was not the first ques- j tion I asked 1 him when we met at Scan dla. I haven’t that much Andy Williams cnuizpan. jx was uic lasu I said, “Don’t jump over the table, but just what is the status of your marriage to Claudlne ? Will there be a di vorce?” He didn’t jump over the ta ble. But the question slowed him down. When he replied, there was a lot to be read be tween the lines. “I don’t know, I honestly don’t know,” he said slowly. “Claudlne and I see each oth er and apend a lot of time with the children. There’s no Strain in our relationship. “I feel there Is very little sense In going as far as di vorce unless there’s a good reason for It. Dike one or the other partner having someone else In their lives they want to marry. As of now, that Isn’t the ease with us.” But to get back to the be ginning of our luncheon ren dezvous. Andy was a few min utes late because he had been taping a 90-minute Interview with a German crew sent here from Berlin to talk with the ; singer whose "Love Story” record is the No. 1 seller in Germany. “In japan, too,” he grinned. Xt didn’t sound conceited. If facts are facts, why not state tbemT For a gentleman of leisure these days (Us weekly TV show was canceled by NBC and . - . "it burned the hell out of me because they didn’t give us the chance to run the fun three-year term"), Andy Is singularly activated and op erating in high good humor. Mo is talking with our State Department and the cultural fickle NBC, are discussing “specials” with his agents; and his records (“the beautiful, beautiful records”) are sell* ing like buttermilk flapjacks, particularly the beautiful, beautiful “Love Story.” “Over the years, I’ve had a lot of luck with songs from motion pictures,” he says. “One of the biggest, ‘Moon River,’ was from ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’; from motion pic tures of the same titles came ‘Days of Wine and Roses,’ ‘Charade,’ ‘Bora Free,’ and now ‘Love Story,’ which may turn out the biggest of all.” Speaking of films reminded me of something puzzling about the Williams career: he is one of the few top sing ers who has reached and main tained, over many years, the salary and celebrity status of a Frank Sinatra, Dean Mar- , tin, Elvis Presley and Bing Crosby without the benefit of; appearing in motion pictures.: “I’ve made a movie or two. The point is, they haven’t made me,” he grins. “I did Td Rather Be Rich’ with San dra Dee at Universal, and, like; all Ross Hunter films, it made money. I’ve tested for a couple of other roles. One I lost to’ Dean Jones. I don’t remember what the other was. I’m not! faying that If Mike Nichols: came along and tapped me for j his next picture I wouldn’t! jump at the chance. So far— I haven’t heard from Mike. It doesn’t matter. “The base of my career is! records. As long as I can keep | on making them and they; keep on selling around the: world, I’ll be happy.” Currently, he’s launching his new album, "You’ve Got a Friend,” and getting ready to j make the song the big number I of his two-week stint at the i Sahara Tahoe and the engage ment following- at Caesars Palace In Las! Vegas. Then’ he’s probably j off to Russia for that big TV special In which he’s a cinch to sing "Love Story" in Russian. All these things are on the platter for Andy, every thing falling into place and in me groove, witn me possi ble exception of the ladies in his life about whom he “really doesn’t know.” "'A % $ ■ Many Are Attending Film Series Of “Civilisation” Both at the morning and evening showing of the second film, ‘The Great Thaw’, in the Kenneth Clark series CIVILI SATION, were several new spec tators. This film, shown last week Wednesday dealt with historic and art developments from the time of Charlemam agne, about 330 A.D., to the nineth centure and the develop ment of Gothic Art. •*d This Week’s Film The film shown on Wednes day, August 18th, is entitled ‘Romance and Reality’. The height of Gothic Art develop ed in the age of the Crusades. Lord Clark comments: “I am in the Gothic World, the world of chivalry, courtesy and romance; a world in which serious things were dene with a sense of play — where even war and theology could become a sort of game; and when architecture reached a point of extravagance unequalled in history. After all the great unifying convictions of the 12th century, high Gothic art can look fantastic and lux urious. And yet, these centuries produced some of the greatest spirits in the whole history of man, among them St. Francis of Assisi and Dante” Next Week’s Film ' On August 25th the film will be entitled "Man—The Measure of All Things” It touches on the emergence of the modern world in Fbrence with its many world-famous artists. The Ren aissance started in Florence in the early 15th Century. This period brought a combination of art and science. The interested public is in vjtcd to the ip a.m. showing each Wednesday in the Church School rooms of the Brevard Presbyterian Church or to the evening showing of the same film at 7:30 p.m. in the Seminar Room of the Brevard College Library. Last year, we produced as much in goods and services as all of Russia, Japan, West Ger many, France and the United Kingdom combined, although their population is two-and-a half times ours — because of porductivity.
