32nd Annual Meeting Of Haywood EMC Is Set For Saturday Event To Begin At 10:30 In Waynesviile The 32nd Annual Meeting of Members of Haywood Elec tric Membership Corporation will be held at the East Way nesviile Elementary School, Waynesviile, N. C., Saturday, August 28th. Registration of members and guests will begin at 9:30 a. m., and the meeting will start at 10:30 a. m. and adjourn at approximately 3:00 p. m., it. was announced by R. C. Sheffield, Manager of the Ccaperative, today. The business session of t.he meeting will include reports of officers, the Manager and com mittees of the Cooperative and the election of nine (9) direc tors (by districts) for the com ing year. A highlight feature of the meeting will be an ad dress by Mr. Chester A. Cog burn, member of the Coopera tive from Route 1, Candler, N. C., former Cooperative attor ney and owner and operator of Pisgah Ranch, who will speak at 11:15 a. m. An interesting feature of this year’s annual meeting program will be t.he eighth annual beauty contest, spon sored by the Women’s Auxili ary Committee, to select “Miss Haywood EMC for 197L” A large number of contestants who must be mem bers of families receiving electric service from Hay wood EMC, are expected to compete for this honor from the various counties served. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winner and the first four runners - up. Token gifts will be awarded to the remaining contestants. The winner will, also, receive a bouquet of roses and a tiara. VFW To Hold Covered Dish Supper, Bingo The monthly covered dish supper and bingo party will be held this Saturday, August 28th, at 7:15 at the VFW post home. All members and their wives are invited, and they are also reminded that they can bring out-of-town guests. Brown, 65, of route 1 Pisgah Forest, died last Saturday in a local hospital af ter a long illness, He was a native of Haywood County and had lived in Tran sylvania County for the past 30 years. He was a retired farmer and a son of the late William J. and Jane Bonham Brown. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Lona Fussell Brown; eight sons, George, Ira and Lester of Hendersonville, James of Wind lock, Wash. Joseph and David of Castle Rock. Wash., William of Candler and Ralph of Bry son City; four daughters. Its first construction project, completed in August of 1939, involved 40 miles of lines to serve 175 members in the southeast section of Haywood County. The Cooperative has steadily exponded its system until it now serves, 7,100 members on 1,277 miles of electric lines in parts of Buncombe, Haywood, Jackson, and Transylvania Counties in North Carolina; Rabun County, Georgia; and Oconee County, South Caro lina. The usage of electricity by members of Haywood EMC has increased during this period from an average of 40 kwh per member per month in 1940 to an average of 600 kwh per member per month today.
