Thaw me 25 different models in Oldsmobile’s 1973 lineup, including three station wagons, the CUTLASS CRUISER (background), the VISTA CRUISER (foreground), and the' spacious Cu* tom Cruiser. 1972 Oldsmobiles Reported To Be Beautifully Restyled Oldsmobile’s beautifully re styled 1972 cars incorporate several major engineering ad vancements, including an in novative spring steel bump er support system designed to greatly reduce now impact collision damage. The new system is being in troduced initially as the front bumper on the 1972 Delta 88’s, 98’s and the Custom Cruiser station wagon. An Oldsmobile exclusive, the spring steel bumper support system permits these 1972 Oldsmobiles to strike a stationary object or another car at minor (parking lot) speed without damage to the bumper bar itself, the surrounding sheet metal, or any other part of the car. The spring steel supports yield upon impact and spring back to their original position. In addition, both front and rear bumpers of the 88’s and 98’s, and the front bumper Of the Toronado are equipped with protective rubber strips for better light impact perfor mance. Bumper guards con tinue optional on the 1972 Cutlasses, Delta 88’s, and Custom Cruiser. In other areas of public con cern, the 1972 Oldsmobiles are being built with an even more intensive Quality control sys stem. The company has expand ed its reliability recheck pro-_ gram to cover 100% of produc tion at its main assembly plant in Lansing. All cars undergo hundreds of inspection checks during assembly, but, in addi tion, are now re-inspected upon completion as they pass through a brand new 45,000 square foot facility. In the reinspection pro cess, the car’s electrical and me chanical operations are fullv rechecked, as are the dial and gai^ge functions, lubricant levels, and the underhood, underbody When you think of prescrip tions. think of VARNER’S, adv. and truck areas. A third area of public con cern is the control of automo tive emissions. Here, too, Oldsmobile engineers have more than met, the increasing ly stringent Federal and Cali fornia exhaust emission re quirements. All of Oldsmo bile’s 1972 engines are equip ped with valve rotators on both intake and exhaust val ves, a feature pioneered by Oldsmobile in 1970. Compared to uncontrolled engines, the 1972 Oldsmobile power plants emit less than l/6th the amounts of hydro . carbons and carbon monoxide. In styling, all 1972 Olds mobiles have undergone sub stantial front and rear improve ments with specific exterior ap pearance changes and bright new interiors. The number of Oldsmo mile models in 1972 is reduc ed from 28 to 25. The Delta Custom series has been dis continued, leaving the Delta 88 and an expanded Delta Royiale line of cars. The Del ta Royale line of cars. The Delta Rovale is produced in four models; hardtop coupe and sedan, a pillar sedan and a convertible. The 4-4-2, formerly marketed as a separate series, is now op tional in the Cutlass coupes and Cutlass Supreme convertible. The handling characteristics of the 4-4-2’s suspension system and power train are now more widely available. The Turbo Hydra - Matic 400 transmission is standard eouipment in 1972 on aU Oldsmobiles equipped with the 445 cubic inch engine. A mod ified version of the 400 is standard on those Delta 88’s and Vista Cruisers ordered with the 350 cubic inch en gine. The Turbo Hydra - Matic 350 OPEN LABOR DAY! On all of the full • size 1972 Oldsmobiles, the very successful “G” ride suspen sion system is continued, with tuning refinements to achieve even higher standards of ride, comfort and handling. An example of a tuning change, on the Delta 88’s, 98’s and the Custom Cruisen is the relocation of the righthand en gine mount to correct the im balance resulting from engine accessories not being evenly dis tributed about the engine cen terline. The new mount loca tion equalizes the forces trans mitted through the mounts in to the frame and makes the car more pleasing from the stand point of ride smoothness and quietness. Other mechanical improve ments found on the 1972 Oldsmobiles include more fade - resistant drum brakes on the Cutlass models, the use of air outlets in the door lock pillars in the flow-thru ventilation system on all full size models, thus eliminat ing decklid air exhaust louv ers.
