Q. I’m a school teacher, age
62, and am paid my salary in
twelve monthly installments.
Am I penalized because I re
ceive regular payments during
the summer months?
A. No. You are considered
“retired” any month you do
not work and earn over
$140,00. Your salary is con
sidered “earned” during the
regular school term rather
than in the months it is ac
tually paid. This is a special
rule for teachers.
Q. What would I have to pay
for my Part A- Hospital in
surance if purchased through
a private insurance company?
A. The latest figure we have
is about $31.00 per months.
Q. My check is not nearly
enough to live on. Can any
thing be done about this? I real
ly need about twice as much
as I’m getting.
A. Yes, however the cost
of such an increase would be
I too great for the worker to
bear. Actually, social securi
ty was never intended to ful
ly replace a worker’s loss of
income. It is designed only to
partially replace loss of in
come. Nevertheless, one-half
of all social security as their
only regular source of ineome.
Q. I require a social security
number of identification for all
checks cashed in my store.
Isn’t this best way to protect
myself from a loss against bad
checks?
A. Actually not! Social Se
curity numbers are confiden
tial and the holder’s identity
could not be furnished to you
in a bad check case. A social
security card or number
should never be used for
identification purposes.
Q. I am retiring in Decem
ber 31, 1971. When should I
apply, what do I need to bring
and do I need appointment*? X
A. By all means call ahead.
You’ll be surprised to loam
usually the entire process
can be handled by telephone.
Your first step is to call your
nearest social security office
immediately for assistance in
establishing your age. If you
have a birth certificate or
church record made before
age 5, you need go no further.
If not. yon’ll probably have
to send for a record of your
age made during the first
frderal census after your
birth. Social security will
help you get the necessary
proofs.
