Am I penalized because I re ceive regular payments during the summer months? A. No. You are considered “retired” any month you do not work and earn over $140,00. Yes, however the cost of such an increase would be I too great for the worker to bear. Actually, social securi ty was never intended to ful ly replace a worker’s loss of income. It is designed only to partially replace loss of in come. Nevertheless, one-half of all social security as their only regular source of ineome. Q. I require a social security number of identification for all checks cashed in my store. Isn’t this best way to protect myself from a loss against bad checks? A. Actually not! Social Se curity numbers are confiden tial and the holder’s identity could not be furnished to you in a bad check case. A social security card or number should never be used for identification purposes. Q. I am retiring in Decem ber 31, 1971. When should I apply, what do I need to bring and do I need appointment*? X A. By all means call ahead. You’ll be surprised to loam usually the entire process can be handled by telephone. Your first step is to call your nearest social security office immediately for assistance in establishing your age. If you have a birth certificate or church record made before age 5, you need go no further. If not. yon’ll probably have to send for a record of your age made during the first frderal census after your birth.
