Brevard's Great First Half Effort
Blitzes T. C. Roberson 49-25
(Continued from Page Two)
this thrust were a 23-yard
' sprint by soph tailback Danny
Walker and a Griffin to
( Wayne Robinson pass good
j for another 22 yards.
Norman, incidentally, had a
t fine night playing his first game
, as a starter for Brevard. He
I scored his third touchdown of
the night on a 17-yard pass from
j back-up quarterback Robert
Charles in the second period. In
all, he carried 14 times for 178
yards against the Rams.
Denny Griffin elected to go
to the air after Brevard
hounded ahead 14-0 on Nor
man’s two scores, hitting
Darius lfoltzrlaw right in t.he
middle of the Ram secondary
on a great pass play that saw
the big end simply outrun the
remaining defenders 67 yards
for the score.
The same Griffin-to-Holtzclaw
combination clicked again a few
minutes later for a 20-yard scor
ing pass play that gave the Blue
Devils a 28-0 lead when Hudson
kicked true for his fourth extra
• point.
A 29-yard pass from Ram
quarterback Tommy Franklin
to end Gary Zumstein got,
Roberson on the board in the
second quarter and the kick
for the extra point narrowed
the margin to 28-7, Brevard.
The Blue Devils got that one
hack quickly when Griffin toss
ed a perfect strike to flanker
Wayne Robinson who sprinted
all the way for the score. The
play covered 48 yards, and Hud
son’s kick raised the count to
35-7, Brevard, still in the second
period.
Brevard scored once again
before halftime when Robert
Charles and Jacob Norman
combined for their 17-yard
scoring pass play with 33 sec
onds remaining before inter
mission. Hudson’s kick con
cluded the first half rout with
Brevard leading 42-7.
It was a different story after
halftime as the Rams came out
determined to make a better
showing than they had in the
first half. This, combined with
a natural let-down on the part
of the Blue Devils, allowed the
Rams to make a real contest of
it in the final two periods, even
though the actual outcome of
the game was never in doubt.
Roberson took the second
half kickoff and moved
straight, down the field for a
score with halfback Sam
Montgomery going over from
the one to climax the 80-yard
drive.
Brevard fumbled the kickoff,
Mitch Dockcns intercepted
Franklin’s pass to get the ball
back, but another Bl"-" Devil
fumble put the Rams back in
business once more.
This threat failed to ma
terialize into a score, but
Roberson did get, a drive go
ing a few minutes later with
the help of two big penalties
against the Blue Devils, and
soph Herbie Bryson plunged
over from the one to score
the Ram’s third touchdown.
Brevard then drove 52 yards
for its lone score of the second
half. Big Mitchell Burr spear
headed this drive, aided by a
22-yard sprint by Griffin. Burr
blasted over from six yards out
to score, and Hudson’s kick
made the scoreboard read 48-19,
Brevard.
Another Brevard fumble
set up' Roberson’s final six
pointer as the Rams took pos
session at Brevard’s 43-yard
line. Tommy Franklin capped
the final drive with a five
yard end sweep, and when
the conversion attempt, failed,
the final score read 49-25 in
favor of the Blue Devils.
Brevard and Roberson are
both in the Mountain AAA Con
ference, but they are in sepa
rate divisions, so the game does
not count in the divisional
standings.
