TRANSYLVANIA'S
MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM
By - Dr. Joann* Bywn
Consulting Psychologist
Attitudes
You will remembef during the moon
flights that the announcer would remark that
the command capsule was in the right atti
tude. This meant that it was in the correct
position or posture for the next step. When
we have a certain mental attitude it means we
think about the attitudes a child takes to
school we are speaking of what position he
has taken with regard to schopf.
Because your children learn their attitudes
from the adults in their lives we need to think
about attitudes in general. We form attitudes
or the positions about people, about events, about
behavior, about government action, about com
munity activities, etc.
last’s think first about rules. There are
various kinds of rules. Those we make at
home, at school, at church, in meetings. Then
there age the rules of the government which
we call laws. The rules of ethics which are
either specifics, such as professional ethics,
or generalities such as general behavior one
toward others. The rules of international na
tion. Again we could go on and on. The im
portant thing is that for any or all of these
rules we take some attitude.
One attitude which many people take to
ward rules is: rules are devised to help us get
along together or to make it easier to get things
done. The people who take this attitude will
usually say — “I go by the rules!”
Another attitude might be: Rules are
not made to cover all situations, so I will
choose which rules I will follow. For example
a man might adhere quite strictly to the rules
of his profession, but fail to adhere to the
rules of ethics in business.
Some people have the atitude that rules
are made to keep us from doing what we want
to do. This person might follow the rules but
with reluctance and often with anger. We see
this in those who will follow the rules of traf
fic in town and speed on the oipen highway,
grudgingly slowing down for the next town’s
traffic regulations.
There are some people who have the atti
tude that: rules are made to be broken.
These are the individuals who deliberately
run stop signs, come late to meetings, fail to
get to dinner on time, or even break govern
mental rules such as failing to pay taxes or
stealing or setting fires. Then, too, there are
those who say: rules are made to be broken—
just don’t get caught! Here we see the
absence of a true ethical attitude and this
changes the position because it moves the atti
tude from “breaking the rifle is OK,” to “the
real crime or wrong is to get caught!”
Then there are a few people who seem to
have taken the attitude “I don’t need any rules
made by anyone but myself.”
Because in this segment we are thinking
about what attitudes your child tfkes to
school we need to give some concern as to
what attitudes we take and how that attitude
might be interpreted by the child. If the
parents set rules of conduct in the home gad
pay no attention when they are broken, or
break the rules themselves, the child will soon
learn “rules are made to be broken.” This is
the attitude he will fake to school.
If Daddy is saying, “It is the rule of this
house that nobody shall take things that belong
to another,” yet he is bringing home paper, rub
ber bands and pencils from his employer — the
child is going to learn that Daddy chooses to go
along with some rules but not all rules.
If the parents are
made to help us all get
get something done more ea
with the rules showing the
better way, the child will
with him to school.
