DIAL 8834250 PAGE SEVEN The Transylvania Times THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1971 B&ta Rho Grqup Installs Tfiree New Members Members of the Beta Rho Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International present ed Mrs. Sushila Chapnerkar, Mrs. Carmen Harris and Mrs. Pat Snowdon, with their pledge pins here August 29, at a tea held at the home of Mrs. Martha Jaye Johnson. Making the presentation was chapter president^ Mrs. Nancy Glazener. All three new giembers are residents of Brevard. Epsilon Sigma Alpha is an international women’s or ganization which emphasizes educational, philanthropic and social activities. Beta Rho chapter is one of more than 1,700 chapters located throughout the world. Local philanthropic proj ects during the past few years include, the Jack and Jill Day Care Center, cloth ing and food for needy fam ilies, help to orphanages, and other community-minded proj ects. —TwT— The regular monthly meet ing of Beta Rho was held September 7, at the home of Mrs. Cookie Barnes in Pisgah Forest. The meeting was a busy one with final arrangements for the State Council meet ing to be held in Brevard on September 18, 1971. After the meeting a work shop was held and the soror ity’s yearbooks were handed out. Immediately following this, Secret Pal gifts were opened. Kathy Rhodes J Named To Po$t At UNC-C Kathy Rhodes has been elected secretary of the four th and fifth floors of Sanford Residence Hall at the .Uni versity of North Carolina at Charlotte. Kathy is a sophomore nurs ing major. She is a sister of Delta Zeta sorority. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Rhodes of 112 Green Acres, Brevard. I ‘UliM Priest .'I,/.: ', CU On WorU 5, our “Around the World” with special emphasis on visits to all sizes and types of temples in India, Cashmir, Afghan stan, Indonesia, Burma and the Philippines: The Book and Plate Club members made this interesting arm chair adventure with Miss Ann Benson Priest as guide and tour director. Some of the temples visit ed were: the beautiful and well preserved Taj Mahal, more a shrine, about 100 miles from Bombay and the temperature 114 degrees. The Emerald Temple in Thailand on the palace grounds where the royal family worships, and just one of the many in that fascinating country. The Golden Temple in Burma, perhaps one of the world’s most beautiful. Not to be overlooked, the Temple of the Tooth — where just once a year “the tooth” is brought out, and of course they claim it to be one of Buddha’s. All these countries have tem ples, but the Philippines Bridge Winners Are Announced Winners at the regular Tuesday evening duplicate bridge game of The Aee of Clubs were the following pairs: 1 - Mrs. Ralph Raymond and General T. L. Futch of Hendersonville 2 - O. Engholm and William Fernald of Hendersonville 3 - Mrs. Harry P. Mooney 'and Mrs. Verne C. Hill 4 - Mrs. M. F. Johnson and Dr. George B. Dysart 5 - Arthur Beddoe and Jerry Tinsley have the most beautiful churches. Aside from temples the members thoroughly enjoyed a three day visit on a house boat with a family of C'ash mir. Miss Priest said she felt the rice terraces somewhat like the temples, seme have been built for generations and they are still building them—lush green color and they give employment apd food. Each country has it’s own special crafts, and the natives utilize their natural resources in every way pos sible. As she guided her tour, Miss Priest showed many treasures from Asia: pottery, temple bells from Thailand and the Philippines^ brass trays and betel nut chests, carved wood, oriental rug, laquer, Papier macbe’, skirt and blouse, silver anklets and jade. Prior to the journey, Mrs. Dana Harris presided over a business session. Mrs. David Kirk appointed committees for the coming year. Mrs. Roy announced that Mrs. Glenn Winston will be Fine Arts Chairman and will be chairman of the District 11 luncheon at Brevard College next March. Mrs. Winston and Mrs. Roy attended the Summer Insti tute at Oteen, and Mrs. Roy attended the Workshop at Burlington this past summer. Yearbook information should be given to Mrs. Thomas E. Ramsay, on Oc tober 5th when she will be hostess for the monthly meet ing. Mrs. Julius Sader was host ess in fhi fiome of "Ml&' Priest, and following refresh ments, Mrs. Harris gave Miss Priest a set of North Carolina luncheon mats in appreciation for the delightful journey and evening in her home. C. 883-3177 Secretaries Hear Mrs. Jenkins At September Meet The Transylvania Legal Secretaries Association held its monthly meeting on Sep tember 14th in the Rhodo dendron Room of Gaithers Cafeteria. John K. Smart, Jr. the scheduled guest speaker was unable to attend. Mrs. Edith Jenkins, Direc tor of the Transylvania Coun ty Department of Social Ser vices, gave a very interesting speeach on the laws of Adop tion Proceedings. Following her talk, Mrs. Jenkins held a question and answer period. The meeting of the Asso ciation will be held on October 12th, at 12:00 noon in the Rhododendron Room of Gaith er’s Cafeteria and will have as its guest speaker, Attorney Smart of the law firm Ram sey, Hill, Smart and Ramsey. His subject will be “The Lib erated Woman.” All members and any interested persons are urged to attend. Glenn Cannon Bridge Winners Are Announced Prize winners at the Glen Cannon bridge, which was held last Wednesday, Sep tember 15th, have been an nounced by Mrs. William Hu ters, Chairman of the bridge series which meets monthly: high score, Mrs. James Todd second place winner, Mrs. Hal A. Breedlove; low score, Mrs. Eugene Stewart; floater .prize, Mrs. Mark Osborne. Hostesses for the October bridge scheduled for Wed nesday, October 20th, will be Mrs. W. D. Beta Epsilon Holds Meeting Beta Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa met in Straus Elementary School Library September 14 at 7:30 The president, Mrs. Doris Warren, presided. The devotional was given by Mrs. Thelma Bryson, Chap lain. Minutes were read by the secretary, Mrs. Jean Young, and treasurer’s re port by Mrs. Vera Taylor. Mrs. Jovhenell Hyatt, pro gram chairman, introduced Mrs. Bonnie Lankard, who gave an art demonstration and lecture. Members, who will be at tending the Western district Workshop at Drexel on Sep tember 25, are Mrs. Jovhenell Hyatt, Mrs. Doris Warren and Mis. Gladys Shuford. Miss Wilson Is Engaged Mr. and Mrs. John H. Wil son, of Brevard, announce the engagement of their daughter, Man.-, to Seabrook Lucas Marchant, son of Mr and Mrs. Thomas M. Marchant of East Parkins Mill road, Greenville, South Carolina. The wedding is planned for Saturday, December 4th, at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Greenville. Eating Styles Change High incomes, better educca tion and increased travel all have an influence on changing our eating patterns. Not only will eating be less conventional and rigid, but 70 per cent of our eating will be away from home by the end of this de cade. At Hospital ^yluxitiary planning *¥Fiem lerdhip ^?t)rive The Executive Board of the Transylvania Community Hospital met September 8th. Mrs. William Dechant, Pres ident presided. The treasur ers report was given by Mrs. Donald Reese. Arrangements for the bridge luncheon to be held on Wednesday, October 27th, were discussed. Mrs. Gordon Sprott will serve as General Chairman and has appointed Mrs. Edward Bennett to sene as Chairman of reserva tions. Early reservations are suggested and may be made by calling Mrs. Bennett at 883-8597. Mrs. W. A. Parry reported on plans for a membership campaign. An invitation is extended to all women in the community to join the Aux iliary either as an active or inactive member. Information regarding these two types of memberships may be obtain ed by calling Mrs. Parry at 883-9489. Mrs. Gene Ramsey, Coffee Cart Chairman, and Mrs. Charles Carter, Information Desk Chairman, are interest ed in hearing from members who are willing to serve the Hospital either by assisting with the coffee cart service which is provided each after noon, or by being on duty at the Information Desk which is in operation each evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p. m. I Kum And Do Chib Holds Meeting The Kum and Do club started their fall meeting with a miniture Fair held at the home of Mrs. Don Ballan tine. The large dining table had a very large pumpkin as a center piece surrounded with sprays of tree tomatoes, cu cumbers and parseley sprigs for the vegetable display. Surrounding the vegetables were the colorful jars of jellies, jams, canned vege tables and fruits as well as pickles and relishes. The members were blue ribbon winners with the fol lowing items; Beets and corn relish, beets and Horse radish relish, cinnamin ap pies, various varieties of peaches, canned pears, sassa fras jelly, orange and carrot marmalade, peach jelly, shell ed pinto beans, peas* krout, string beans, tomatoes, squash, dill pickle and a cucumber pickle in red and green for Christmas was es pecially eye appealing. A mys tery guest entered HIS grape jelly and won first prize. Mrs. Ballantine led in the devotional followed by Mrs. Harry Heater in prayer. The members gave the highlights of their summer experiences and travels. Welcomed were Mrs. George Lade and Mrs. Ad rienne Harvey as guests. The members enjoyed a light luncheon of sandwicr.es, coffee and a delicious cole slaw dressing made by Mrs. Ellen Foot for cabbage slaw which had been presented for the fair and the members tasting. One of Mrs. Ballan tine’s boys entered a bar.an na Spice cake that not only looked great but was a de licious ending for the luncheon. The October meeting will be wjth Mrs. M. H. Lawton at which time we will learn to make flowers from the plastic egg cartons. Mrs. Dorothy Case, Personal Development Chairman, will be in charge of the program. Plans will be made for Na tional Business and Profes sional Woman’s Week in Oc tober. Business and Profes sional Women’s Clubs of the Western Area will meet Oc tober 9th and 10th at Oak Grove Park Inn in Asheville. Several local members plan to attend and will participate.
