Brevard’s 10th grade “A”
team opened their season
with a hard-fought 25-14 win
over Reynolds Jayvees here
last Thursday night.
The game was a close one,
with Reynolds battling for a
winning touchdown deep in
Brevard territory with only five
seconds remaining in the game.
Reynolds had the ball on
Brevard’s 10 yard line, trail
ing by only 19-14, when they
completed a pass on Bre
vard’s three yard line. Blue
Devil Gary Wynn hit the pass
receiver hard, causing a fum
ble, then scooped up the ball
and sprinted 97 yards for a
Brevard touchdown as the
time ran out.
Wynn also scored another
Blue Devil marker on a 8 yard
run, while William Lynch scor
ed on a five yard thrust, and
quarterback Dale Griffin pass
ed 42 yards to Jimmy Phillips
for another touchdown.
The “A” team will travel
to Pisgah this Thursday night
for a 7:30 game against the
Pisgah Jayvees.

Brevard’s explosive Blue
Devils scored six touchdowns
in their first ten offensive
plays last Saturday night to
completely outclass the visit
ing Swain High Maroon
Devils by a score of 48-6.
The win was Brevard’s third
in as many outings and sets the
stage for the Blue Devils’ im
portant Parkway Division clash
here this Friday night with
North Buncombe
Swift Jacob Norman had
the young Maroon Devils
staggering early as he scored
on runs of 49 yards and 78
yards, and set up another
score with a 51 yard jaunt to
Swain’s four yard line all in
the first half.
Mitchell Burr capped Nor
man’s 51 yard sprint with a four
yard scoring run up the middle,
and quarterback Denny Griffin
scampered down the sidelines
45 yards for another six pointer.
Alert Donnie Credille re
covered a blocked punt in the
end zone for yet. another first
half Brevard score, and with
true-toe Stan Hudson con
verting after all six touch
downs, the “Big Blue Ma
chine” led 42-0 at halftime.
The Blue Devils also scored
the first time they gained ball
possession in the second half
as Ben Brown set this one up
by partially blocking Swain’s
punt at the Maroon Devil 45.
Two penalties and three plays
later, Randy Moretz went over
from the two yard line to score
Brevard’s seventh touchdown of
the evening. A two point con
version attempt failed, but Bre
vard led 48-0 early in the third
period.
Swain’s only score of the
evening came as they took
1 the next kickoff and drove 71
yards with Nat. Watson
sprinting the final 29 yards.
The hard running halfback
then tried for a two point con
version, but he was stopped
short, leaving the score 48-6
in favor of Brevard.
The game continued the
quick-striking antics that Bre
vard has established so far in
the young season. In their first
three games, the Blue Devils
have now scored fifteen touch
downs in first half play, and two
six pointers in the last half.
“We like to get out front
early and stay there,” quip
ped Coach Ed Emory in com
menting on Brevard’s 3-0 rec
ord.

in which Norman carried the ball,

touchdowns. His brilliant offensive
performance earned “Player of the

the way for Brevard’s 48-6 win over
the visiting Maroon Devils from
