First Half Scoring Spree Continues As Brevard Whips Swain 48-6 Brevard "A "Team Nip Reynolds By 25-14 Score PORT PAGE Brevard’s 10th grade “A” team opened their season with a hard-fought 25-14 win over Reynolds Jayvees here last Thursday night. The game was a close one, with Reynolds battling for a winning touchdown deep in Brevard territory with only five seconds remaining in the game. Reynolds had the ball on Brevard’s 10 yard line, trail ing by only 19-14, when they completed a pass on Bre vard’s three yard line. Blue Devil Gary Wynn hit the pass receiver hard, causing a fum ble, then scooped up the ball and sprinted 97 yards for a Brevard touchdown as the time ran out. Wynn also scored another Blue Devil marker on a 8 yard run, while William Lynch scor ed on a five yard thrust, and quarterback Dale Griffin pass ed 42 yards to Jimmy Phillips for another touchdown. The “A” team will travel to Pisgah this Thursday night for a 7:30 game against the Pisgah Jayvees. The win was Brevard’s third in as many outings and sets the stage for the Blue Devils’ im portant Parkway Division clash here this Friday night with North Buncombe Swift Jacob Norman had the young Maroon Devils staggering early as he scored on runs of 49 yards and 78 yards, and set up another score with a 51 yard jaunt to Swain’s four yard line all in the first half. Mitchell Burr capped Nor man’s 51 yard sprint with a four yard scoring run up the middle, and quarterback Denny Griffin scampered down the sidelines 45 yards for another six pointer. Alert Donnie Credille re covered a blocked punt in the end zone for yet. another first half Brevard score, and with true-toe Stan Hudson con verting after all six touch downs, the “Big Blue Ma chine” led 42-0 at halftime. The Blue Devils also scored the first time they gained ball possession in the second half as Ben Brown set this one up by partially blocking Swain’s punt at the Maroon Devil 45. Two penalties and three plays later, Randy Moretz went over from the two yard line to score Brevard’s seventh touchdown of the evening. A two point con version attempt failed, but Bre vard led 48-0 early in the third period. Swain’s only score of the evening came as they took 1 the next kickoff and drove 71 yards with Nat. Watson sprinting the final 29 yards. The hard running halfback then tried for a two point con version, but he was stopped short, leaving the score 48-6 in favor of Brevard. The game continued the quick-striking antics that Bre vard has established so far in the young season. In their first three games, the Blue Devils have now scored fifteen touch downs in first half play, and two six pointers in the last half. “We like to get out front early and stay there,” quip ped Coach Ed Emory in com menting on Brevard’s 3-0 rec ord. Let Us Do Your Job Printing The Transylvania Times Jacob Norman Earns Brevard's "Player Of The Week" Honors Brevard’s Jacob Norman only carried the ball four times against the Swain High Maroon Devils last week, but he scored two touchdowns and gained 191 yards in those four carries to earn “Player of the Week” honors for the Blue Devils. The hard-running sprinter has now carried 30 times in three games for 417 yards and five touchdowns. He is aver aging 13.9 yards every time he carries the ball. “Even though he didn’t play a great deal against Swain,” Coach Ed Emory stated, “What he did during •he time he was in there cer tainly earned “Player of the Week” honors for him.
