Will Be Announced On Friday

Improvement Contest iof the
1971 Western North Carolina
Development Program Will be
announced at a luncheon meet
ing oh Friday, September 24 at
i noon at Bailey’s Cafeteria,
Shopping Center,

Fitty-hine organized rural
communities competed in the
special Roadside Contest this
year and 12 county winners
were judged in area competi
tion last week. Cedar Mountain
represented Transylvania coun
ty in the judging.
The presentation of awards
in the rural beautification pro
gram will be made in conjunc
tion with a planning meeting of
the area improvement prograih’s
Steering Committee represent
ing the western counties.
The committee, which is
composed of members from the
counties participating in the
WNC Community Development
Program, will set up the sched
ule for area judging of the
overall program later this fall
and also make plans and set the
awards schedule for the 1772
contest.
The rural roadside beautifi
cation contest is sponsored an
nually by the Asheville Agri
tural Development Council and
the agricultural agencies and
local sponsors in the western
counties. Purpose is to stimu
late organized efforts by com
munity clubs in clean-up and
beautification projects and to
recognize those doing the best
job on a year-round basis.
First prize of $150 in the con
test will be awarded by ADOA
Corporation of Biltmore. Second
prize Of $100 will be given by
the Coca-Cola Bottling Com
pany and $50 third prize by
Ivey’s. Four honorable men
tion awards of $25 each are
sponsored by Gerber Products
Company and /'Seville Federal
Savings & Loan Association.
Furniture Upholstery Course
To Be Offered Beginning 30th
A course in furniture uphol
stery will be offered at the
Cathey’s Creek community cen
ter starting on September 30.
This course, sponsored by the
Adult Education Program of
Transylvania County Schools
and the Blue Ridge Technical
Institute, will be a community
project, but Will not be limited
to those living within the com
munity.
Classes will meet on Mondays
and Thursdays of each week
from 7:00-10:00 p.m., and will
last for IS weeks. Those attend
ing are encouraged to bring a
piece of their own furniture
and learn by doing.
Class size will be limited.
Those who have pre-registered
will be enrolled first.

CATHEY’S CREEK — It has
beeh very wet for a few days in
our section. Several farmers
are wishing the sun would stay
out till they get their tops all
cut and the last of those good
cornfield beans picked.
We of this section were so
deeply saddened to hear of the
sudden death of Mrs. Corrine
Frost last week. We wish to
convey our deepest sympathy
to her family and the number
less friends who loved her so
dearly.
Pfc. Keith R. Thomas spent
the weekend with his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thomas.
Also a roommate of Keith’s
Pvt. Dexter Shewerman who is
from Naporita, Colorado. He
was very impressed with the
mountains in North Carolina
and says they are beautiful.
We want to wish a very
speedy recovery to Edith Ashe
Green who underwent surgery
on Thursday.
Also we are sorry to, learn of
the passing of Walter Hollings
worth of WaynesviUe. He was
a son of the late Dave and Becky
McKinney Hollingsworth. Some

the Open House program at
North Carolina State Universi
ty on October 9th. This is an
annual event sponsored by the
School of Agriculture and Life
Sciences and Forest Resources

Beverage will be provided.

Three New Officers Installed
By Junior High Student Council
Three new officers were re
cently installed in the Brevard
Junior High Student Council.
The election was held amidst
an enthusiastic display of bud
ding political aspirations and
vibrant school spirit.
The office of vice-president
was assumed by seventh-grader
Kathy Brown. The officer who
will be handling the funds at
BJH is eighth-grade treasurer
elect Pam Felty. Pam has al
ready had some experience in
junior high government and

will be sharpening his powers
