Attitudes
When Maury Jane was talking to her hus
band about what Sammy took to school with
him, Joe brought out that Sammy was learn
ing things from the community, the church
and other people in the town. So today let’s
consider what attitudes the student learns
from the community.
The community’s attitude about school is
that it is one of our most important institutions.
If we look at it from the money stand point we
see that 51% of local taxes go for educational
purposes. And this is in addition to State and
Federal funds which are put into educating the
child. But community action or inaction which
defeated the school bond issue and allowed con
tinuing use of school buildings which have been
declared sub-standard and too old to be repaired
extensively points to an attitude that is some
what contradictory. If education is important
is our attitude one of “We’ll go this far but no
farther!” And is this confusing to the student?
What is the community teaching the stu
dent about the use and abuse of drugs and al
cohol? In 1970 1 spoke to a woman about the
young men and women under the influence
of drugs seen sitting in a compicious place in
town. She said, “I've been down-town every
day and I didn’t see them.” Is our attitude
one that says “If we don’t look we won’t see
it—or it will go away?” In similar vein how
many of our children are growing up with the
attitude that to be a man a person must drink
strong liquor? What do you think Transyl
vania’s attitude is about this?
Much that is being done in Transylvania
County shows an attitude of concern about the
people. There are many public agencies and
private organizations which are working hard
to say “We care!” But how many of our people
maintain an attitude about change which says
“It was good enough for father, so it’s good
enough for me?” Is this attitude one which car
ries over to the student in the form of “My dad
didn’t finish school and he’s doing all right!”
This is an attitude which can lead to some of the
many drop-outs which we see.
What is our community attitude about
the rights of all people? We have no segrega
tion in the schools, but we have only token
integration when it comes to housing. What
does this say to the student? Has your church
made any attempts to integrate your congre
gation ? And are we as concerned about the
rights of the little fellow as we are about the
rights of big business. One good sign was the
Council's refusal to rezone an area of town
near the airport.
What is the community attitude about
what should be taught at school? There is
knowledge that all students are not college
bound; that some students need training for vo
cations, trades and skilled work. But is our com
munity attitude one which urges the school au
thorities to change the school program or do we
insist on the old “reading, writing and arithme
tic” program? Can we change our attitude to
one which demands that the school program
really educates all those who can be educated?
Many of you can think of other attitudes
which we might discuss. Talk them over with
your friends and families. The attitudes
which our children take today will determine
what tomorrow will be.
