The North Carolina Society of
County and Local Historians
will hold its Fall Tour in Tran
sylvania County, Brevard, on
October 31, at Cedar Mountain,
in cooperation with the Cedar
Mountain Community of West
ern North Carolina Community
Development Program. This
community was particularly dis
tinguished for its citizen-in
volvement effort this past
month. Also cooperating in this
joint honor is the organization
of the Transylvania County His
torical Association.
This meeting will be held at
the Sherwood Forest Barn,
Cedar Mountain, and the out-of
town visitors will make head
quarters at the Robin Hood
Barn and will occupy cottages
in the Forest. This announce
ment is made by: Mrs. Margaret
McMahan, Secretary, Fayette
ville, and Hugh B. Johnston,
Tour Chairman Wilson.
This organization calls for a
well-organized program of ac
tivities, which will make the
Society known and respected in
the State of North Carolina. One
of its members, Miss Medleyv
has personally financed the cost
of a statewide survey of 100
counties, seeking information
on the number of published
county histories and active his
torical societies in the counties
of the state. This is being put
underway by the corresponding
secretary, who will tabulate re
sults for the records and for
possible future projects of the
Society.
The major work of the So
ciety now is to bring member
ship in line. The dues are:
Regular Dues — $3.00
Sustaining — $10.00
Life Membership — $40.00
Contributing — $5.00
Husband and Wife — $5.00
Memberships are solicited
and invitation to attend this
joint meeting is extended.
Tentative Schedule
10:00 a.m. — Meeting at the
Cedar Mountain Community
Center (near the Robin Hood
Barn, situated on Highway 276,
or Greenville Highway, 9 miles
from Brevard.)
11:00 a.m. — Meet in service
with the Rocky Hill Baptist
Church. While there will accom
plish the attendance of the serv
ice of the church and at the
same time have a planned pro
gram.
Special historical research on
the histories of the churches in
this area will be presented in
the planned program. Pioneer
Preachers, Circuit Riders, Camp
Meetings, and Preachers and
Pulpits from the Frontier.
12:30 p.m. — Dinner will be
served as a Dutch Treat by the
Cedar Mountain Community

Cauman of New York City,
Private Day Care Consultant,
.who spoke at the Saturday ban*
quet and Sunday luncheon. Each
of the more than 200 persons
attending also took part in
five hours of workshops on
planning programs for young
children and teaching specific
age groups.
During the meeting, the As
sociation voted to change its
name to the North Carolina Day
Care Association. All day care
facilities will be licensed af
ter January 1, 1972, and will
be invited and encouraged to
join this statewide organisa
tion.

CATHEY’S CREEK — Those
who love the autumn colors
may ride our section at anytime
now as the trees are a magnifi
cent sight to see.
There was a meeting held at
the Jtfd Hill Copter on Sunday
dfternpon. Plans were made for
a Halloween party. The .exact
date to be yet announced to not
conflict with the schools carni
vals, ftp. There were seven
hoard members present and tyhe
group decided to help an elder
ly couple Who have had sickness
for quite sotnetime. If you are
asked to contribute In any way,
it will be most , helpful and ap
preciated. There will be papers
sent around typed by the secre
tary and the children and adults
will all participate.
There was quite a bit of ex
citement in our section last
Thursday when three young
men, one of whom resides on
Ross Road, Thomas Fisher, was
seriously injured when a car in
which he was riding piunged
down an embankment near he
Charlie Green home on Hannah
Ford road. We were told on
Sunday that Thomas was still in
intensive care in Mission hos
pital, Asheville. We hope he
will soon be well and able to
come home.
Ward Breedlove is still con
fined to Mountain Sanitarium at
Fletcher where his condition
was about the same. Mrs. Sally
McCall and Junior accompanied
Mrs. Lona Breedlove to visit
him on Saturday.
Richard Garren is improving
in the local hospital. We learned
that Earl Lee was also confined
to the local hospital. We hope
that all these will soon be well
and able to return home.
Mrs. Carr Owen is improving
nicely after a stay in the hos
pital.
The Bill Adams family and a
cousin from Maryland visited
Ethel Lee recently.

Ethel Lee and Miss Mae Owen
of our section.

Leroy Summey has returned
home from Mission Hospital
where he underwent knee surg
ery and is doing fine.

Dance And Business Meeting
At 8:00 p. m., Friday Octo
ber 22nd, the American Legion
Hall will once again rock to the
sound of country and Blue
Grass music as the Sylvan
Squares Fourth Friday dance
gets underway.
Richard Silvers will be spin
ning the discs and calling the
patterns for the Sylvan Squares
and their guests.
During the dance, the club
will be called to order for their
annual business meeting. All
club members are urged to be
present for this dance and im
portant meeting.
In addition to the “sure to
please” calling of Richard Sil
vers there is another special
feature planned which is sure
to be a square dance pleaser.

PROBLEM: Why the balance does not work.
NEEDED: Ruler and string, coins.
DO THIS: Suspend the ruler on the string above a
table top, and try to balance coins on it. It does not work
well. Put a screw eye in it, tie the string to it, and the
ruler becomes a balance that can be used to show the
principle of the lever.
HERE’S WHY: The ruler cannot balance if suspended by
a string from the lower side, because the center of grav
ity is above the suspension point of falcrum. Either one
side or the other will go down and touch the table top.
Suspending it by the screw eye places the balance point
above the ruler, and a balance can be effected as long
as the coins are not stacked too high.

The Upper French Broad
Defense Association today an
nounces that the organizations
annual eeting will be held
this Saturday night, October
23rd at 7:30 p. m. in the Mills
River School.
The school is located just
south of the junction of state
routes 191 and 280 on the first
connecting road between these
two routes.
The meeting will be held for
the election of officers and
members of the Board of Di
rectors. A review of the past
years events and important
plans for the future will be
presented.
All members are urged to
attend this important meeting.
The chairman asks that “if
you are not now a member come
and join at the meeting.”
This UFBDA is, “A citizens
group organized to oppose TVA
project for the Upper French
Broad Basin.”
