Pot C*| PROBLEM: Why the balance does not work. NEEDED: Ruler and string, coins. DO THIS: Suspend the ruler on the string above a table top, and try to balance coins on it. It does not work well. Put a screw eye in it, tie the string to it, and the ruler becomes a balance that can be used to show the principle of the lever. HERE’S WHY: The ruler cannot balance if suspended by a string from the lower side, because the center of grav ity is above the suspension point of falcrum. Either one side or the other will go down and touch the table top. Suspending it by the screw eye places the balance point above the ruler, and a balance can be effected as long as the coins are not stacked too high. This special “Science '’or You” feature is sponsored by Olin Corporation at Pisg^n Forest in co-operation with rhe Transylvania Times.
