News From
US Forest Service,
Fire Training Held
The Annual Fire Training Meeting was
held last week. The main purpose of the meet
ing is for Federal, State, and Private fire
fighters to get together and learn new tech
of fire fighting.
Fire Control Technician Randall Kitchen
and County Ranger Clark Grissom discussed last
spring’s fire season. Randall said that although
we have had many rainy days this summer the
actual rainfall is low. We average 75 inches
per year in this area and we have had only 31
inches thru October 1.
A movie called “Fire vs. Fire” showed the
use of fire to fight fire. The difference be
tween backfire and burning out the line was
illustrated.
Following the movie, we were served a
famous George Brown stew dinner cooked at the
fire field kitchen set up at the Forest Service
work center.
This weekend looks like a good one to
view the fall colors. Everyone is invited to
stop in at the Cradle of Forestry on their way
up the mountain.

August and goldenrod aller
gies are again staring me in
the face. Is there any part of
the United States where I can
go to be less burdened by my
month of sneezing?
Mr. M. S., Md.
Dear Mr. S.: The utopias for
hay fever sufferers vary each
year.
It is almost impossible to
predict exactly where people
sensitive to goldenrod and
ragweed will be completely
free of symptoms.
Allergy “maps” of the Unit
ed States compiled by the
American Academy of Aller
gies can predict where suf
ferers might be assured a
greater degree of comfort, if
not complete control.
An excellent new booh, The
Complete Allergy Guide, by
Dr. Howard G. Rapaport and
Shirley Linde, has such a geo
graphic distribution and sug
gests where the allergy vic
tim can escape.
The booh is aimed at the
lay reader and presents every
aspect of allergies, I have not
seen one more helpful than
this one.
Dr. Lester Coleman has pre
pared a special booklet for
readers of this column. “Alco
holism—A Family Disease.”
It probes this grave problem
and offers hopeful advice. For
your copy, send 25 cents in
coin and a large, self-ad
dressed, stamped envelope to

care of this newspaper. Please
mention the booklet by title,

Day Student’s life If

Boarding studrtts at BrtVard
College Bat many advantages
of living on otmpus. Included
on their list is the proximity to
classes and various school
events, the opportunity to make
new friends, and a chance to
live away from home. Yet, in
spite of these seemingly con
vincing reasons for residing on
campus, over fifty students at
Brevard College reside at home.
Besides financial and family
obligations, day students cite
many good reasons for living at
home. Among these are seeing
old friends, keeping an old job,
and continuing to live in the
same area. Some commuting
students get a car by staying at
