Murray and Poe
display paintings,
in Winston-Salem
The Gallery of Contemporary
Art in Winston-Salem, North
Carolina, has recently announc
ed that paintings by Tim Mur
ray and Robert Poe of Brevard
College have been accepted
for the three - month Winston
Salem Annual Exhibit. Of Mr.
Murray’s works, the polymer
“African Corner #2” was ac
cepted to be displayed. Mr.
Poe’s “Azonal”, an acrylic, will
be shown also.
Although art is something
that can only be experienced
visually, artists are being forced
to talk more about it. Recent
ly Mr. Murray and Mr. Poe gave
some guidelines for a better
appreciation of contemporary
art. They would first remind
the viewer that the history of
twentieth century art is based
on the premise that it is not
so important what you see but
how you see it.
Too often the public tries to
create much more mystery in
a work of art than is really
there. They need to understand
that the artist is trying to
eliminate complexities in order
to reach a simple way of ex
pressing himself.
In some cases this may mean
that the only aesthetic response
can be from the artist himself,
but gradually the public is be
ginning to grasp the concepts
of the artist and appreciate his
dealings with perceptive values
as well as with social values.

Homecoming
Dance held
As the night started off with
music and dancing, everyone
awaited the crowning of the
Homecoming Queen. The court
was presented by President Da
vis. Freshman attendants and
their escorts were Cecilia Chiles,
escorted by Steve Burch; Joye
Jones, escorted by Bobby Ken
nedy. The sophomore attend
ants were Lynn Sarella, escort
ed by Jimmy Copeland; Lila
Salisbury, escorted by Rod
Rudisill; and Laurie Kidd, es
corted by Mike Allen.
As the group anxiously await
ed the crowning of the Home
coming Queen, President Da
vis presented a white rose to
Clyde Penry as a joke.
The Homecoming Queen for
1971-72 was Laurie Kidd. Then
the Queen and her escort
danced as the attendants fell
in behind.
SNEA Represents
B.C. At U.N.C.-A.
On Tuesday, October 5, four
students and Mr. Tawney at
tended a district meeting for
the SNEA at the University of
North Carolina at Asheville. In
addition to Brevard College, Le
noir - Rhyne College, Western
Carolina University, Mars Hill
College, and the University of
North Carolina at Asheville
were represented. This was a
cluster meeting to unite the
colleges of this area to compare
notes about their activities,
projects, and the courses avail
able at each college. Voter-elec
tion drives (drives for educa
tion majors to become involved
in politics) were discussed also.
The SNEA is still accepting
members in hopes that educa
tion majors will become involv
ed in a club which will benefit
them. If any non-member is in
terested in joining, the next
meeting will be held on Mon
day, October 18. For further de

Houser.

Weaver College Rummage Sale
Painting Donated October 23rd
To Brevard
In the spring of 1971, Ruby
and Pressley Biel of Austin,
Texas, donated to Brevard Col
lege a massive painting of a
new campus proposed for Wea
ver College in the late 1920’s.
This painting is now on exhibit
in the campus library
The Archives Committee,
chaired by Mr. David Holcombe,
and consisting in addition of
Mrs. Mary Stevenson, Mrs. Mar
garet McLarty, and Miss Irene
Brychcin, took on the project
and placed the painting on dis
play this falL

Brevard College’s past and to

these facts for use as aids in
research into the past.
Egg Publicity
KIAMESHA LAKE, N. Y. —
“Unless those of yon in the egg
industry take steps now to com
bat adverse publicity, you aren’t
going to be in the egg busi
ness in a few years,” declared
Dr. L. A. Wilhelm president of
the Poultry and Egg National
Board.
Dr. Wilhelm, was asked by
the Neppco program committee
to review the current status of
the cholesterol controversy.
He charged that DESPITE A
LACK OF CONCLUSIVE EVI
DENCE linking heart disease
and cholesterol, the industry
has been blasted at least twice
a month since April with pub
licity on the dangers of choles
terol.
Outlining PENB’s basic stra
tegy, Dr. Wilhelm listed five
target groups who will be told
the basic story that “eggs are
good for you.”
One of these primary target
groups will be the medical and
para-medical professions. The
others will be food editors and
specialists consumer educators,
food retailers.

Mrs. Burke Dies
In Palm Beach
Mrs. Marjorie Burke, of 440
Brazilian Avenue, Palm Beach,
Florida, passed away on Octo
ber 14th.
Mrs. Burke, who was a mem
ber of the Board of Trustees at
the Brevard Music center, had
many friends here. She owned
a home at the Music center.
A memorial service were con
ducted last Saturday morning,
October 16th, at the First Chris
tain Science Church at Palm
Beach.
Mrs. Burke had lived in Palm
Beach since 1964, and prior to
that time, she lived at Ocean
Ridge, Florida.
She was a patroness of the
Living Arts and worked with
the Civic Opera and local chorus
groups of Palm Beach.
She also funded many scho
larships here at the Music cen
ter for promising young musi
cians.
She was also a member of
Quills.
A son, William Fox of Litch
field, Conn., survives.
Scobee - Combs Funeral home
of Boynton Beach, Florida, was
in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, it was re
quested that donations be made
to the Brevard Music center.
Top Nickel Markets In 1970
In 1970, as in previous years,
stainless steel was the largest
single nickel - consuming pro
duct. Of the 985 million pounds
of new nickel consumed, 41 per
cent went into stainless. The
consumer products industry
represented the biggest end
use for nickel-containing pro
ducts.

Hart Promoted To Assistant
Attorney General In State
Attorney General Robert
Morgan has announced the pro
motion of Ladson Frederick
Hart of Brevard to the position
of Assistant Attorney General,
North Carolina Department of
Justice. Mr. Hart is assigned
to the Department’s Asheville
office in the Northwestern
Bank Building.
His primary duties include
extensive trial work for the
State Highway Commission and
Worksman’s Compensation and
Tort Claims in the western
counties. He also represents
the State in both civil and
criminal appellate cases before
the Court of Appeals and the
North Carolina Supreme Court.
Mr. Hart, a resident of Bre
vard, was graduated from the
Transylvania County School
system, North Carolina State
University, and Wake Forest
University, where he received a
Juris Doctor degree in 1968.
He has completed professional
schools at both the Universi
ty of North Carolina (Chapel
Hill) and the University of Vir
ginia.
He is a member of the North
Carolina State Bar, the Fed
eral Bar, the North Carolina
