ALMAR FARM

BY CAL CARPENTER
Well, here we go again.
Back up the mountain. No,
it’s not trouble with the wat
er system again, just a little
adventure I had when I took
my new truck up there while
putting some finishing touch
es on the job I started more
than a year ago.
I wanted to build a shelter
over the spring, so I loaded
some lumber and roofing on the
truck one afternoon and took
it up. Using the four - wheel
drive, l had no trouble going
up even though the steep road
1 had bulldozed when I began
the job has washed some and is
now pretty narrow and shelv
ing in some places. The top of
the ground was dry, so I just
stayed close to the mountain
side and went right on up.
I built my shelter in about
three hours, loaded my tools
back on the truck, and then the
fun began.
My first, mistake was in de
ciding to turn around. I’d
had a little larger place bull
dozed at the head of the hol
low above the spring; and, al
though I’d had sense enough
to back out the one time I’d
had my old Jeep pickup up
there before, this time I
thought I’d turn. The ground
seemed solid, and I wasn’t
looking forward to backing
down that narrow, soft road
with the steep bank down in
to the hollow so close on one
side.
So I pulled on up to the end
of the re ad and stated trying to
turn. It was a tight place, but
I’d have made it if the ground
had been as dry as I thought.
It wasn’t, of course, or I
wouldn’t be writing this. The
next thing I knew my wheels
had gone through the dry leaves
and topsoil in that damp hollow
and I was stuck.
Boy was I stuck! Thu

track was crosswise behind a
big poplar tree and it was
practicaclly down to the
axles. My “mud and snow”
tires might be good for snow
but I’m here to tell you they
aren’t much for mud. The tire
treads were full of thick
gumbo and I might as well
have had smooth tires for all
the traction I had.
1 knew I couldn’t get it out
by myself so I left it and walked
back down the mountain. I call
ed my £ood neighbor Spud War
ren.
“I need help again, Spud,” I
said.
Spud's used to this by now, I
guess. He said he’d come right
over. He and his son Steve were
over in a few minutes.
We went back up the hill
with the tractor, chains, a cable
and pulley.
We worked for two hours
and it was getting dark. We
tried all kinds of cable hook
ups, pulling with the tractor,
but none of them worked, for
after we’d churned up the
leaves and dry topsoil, even
the tractor wheels would spin
before exerting enough pull
to help. Spud, who’s the best
man 1 know for a job like
that, kept coming up with
new ideas, and we tried them
all. But the track was still
stuck.
Just to make the cheese more
binding, this was the afternoon
that hurricane Ginger was ex
pected to come ashore on the
North Carolina coast. The very
logical forecast was that it
would rain, likely heavy, by the
next morning. If we didn’t get
the truck out, chances were it
would be there for many days;
for if we had any rain to speak
of we’d hardly be able to walk
up the steep places in that red
clay road much less bring any
kind of vehicle to pull the truck
out.
We’d decided that rain fore
cast of no rain forecast, we
weren’t going to get it out.
I put my tools in the cab so
they wouldn’t get wet and got
reed? to go home. Spud sug
Kted we try just one more
e. We passed the cable
around a tree to get a side
wise pull and hooked it to the
tractor. This time it worked!
The rear end of the truck was
dragged onto firmer ground.
It could then be backed out
the way I should have done to
start with.
With grateful relief, I start
ed to back down the mountain.
1 was real careful; thought I
was against the bank on the
mountain side. But my tired
eyes, the backup lights—what
ever—deceived me. The first
thing I knew, 1 felt the truck
settle sideways. I tried to pull
forward, then back onto the
road. The truck only settled
more. I got out and had a look.
I had both wheels off the
crumbling side of the road
above a steep bank that fell
some 30 feet into the hollow!
After all that work and wor
ry, just when I’d thought
everything was going to be
fine, I'd put the truck back in
a worse spot than it had been
in.
I was off at the top of the
steepest place on the road. Spud
had gone ahead with the tractor
and I - yelled for him to come
back to pull me out. But the
tractor wouldn’t back up the
hill—the wheels spun about
half way up. A tractor you know,
won’t back up a steep place
very well—because of the way
the lugs are made on the tires.
And there was no tow on the
front of the tractor to use in
pulling the truck if we took it
up the hill forward. It was full
dark by then; there was no hope
of getting tiie truck out that
night.
I spent the night worrying
about my truck. I lay awafe
listening for the rain to start.
Came moraine and still no
rain, I figured I had a re
prieve and Spud being at
work, I went for other help.
I was fortunate enough to
find neighbor Bill Pressley off
work. Bill is not only a top
notch mechanic but another of
those people like Spud Warren
who can do just about anything
with machinery. I got Bill and

It's A Big Deal In Coach's Room
When Chemistry Classes Work
The first time a student en
ters a science lab, he is con
fronted with a strange and bi
zarre concoction of apparatus,
chemicals, and an infinite col
lection of expensive and ex
tremely fragile equipment.
The instructing professor, or
teacher, is completely unaware
of the problems that the new
“knowledge seekers” are ex
periencing. The instructor has
only one thing in mind, getting
down to the nitty - gritty of the
course. It is best if the student
obtains a notebook. It will prove
vital in note - taking and comes
in very handy when you run
out of paper towels, kleenex,
etc.
The most important thing
that the clumsy student should
do is to be punctual on the
day that lab stations are as
signed. You should try to ob
tain a lab station as far away
from the instructor as possible.
Then if you make a horrible mis
take, only you, your partner,

When you think of prescrip
tions. think of VARNER’S, adv
and other clumsy peers will ev
er know.
Next, the less intelligent
student should find an intel
lectual person for a partner.
Let them handle all the break
able apparatus and dangerous
chemicals. Look very involved
in the experiment and try to
be observant. Ask only intelli
gent questions. Be the first one
to come in to the lab and be
the last one to leave. If you
fall down on intelligence, make
it up with perseverance.
If you do all of the above,
you will soon develop a good
laboratory technique. Although
you will have a great Deal to
do, perhaps you will make a
giant step for Science.
