a. iHMnmii TRANSYLVANIA'S MfNTAL HEALTH PROGRAM By - Dr. Joanna Bjrara Consulting Psychologist Before we go on with some of the things children take to school with them I’d like to think with you today about the Mental Health Program itself. We were grieved to lose Dr. Alfred M. Elwell as director of the program. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Janies W. Tyson has been appointed to that position. , ®r. Tyson is a local physician affiliated t with Newland Clinic. He received his medi- ’ cal degree from the University of Texas, Med ical Division at Galveston and served in the Marine Corps at Cherry Point. We are fortunate to have this young man who is interested in the mental health of our community and one who has had experience in working with drug abusers. With Dr. Tyson at the head the present staff hopes to push on in developing the men tal health of Transylvania County. The pres ent staff includes: Neil P. Mitchell, M.D..D.P.M. psychiatrist, Joanna Byers, Ph.D., psychologist, Jessie Lollis, Ii.N., P.H.N. who is acting coordinator of the program and Hilda Pustorino, Secretary. Dr. Mitchell is the Director of the Alco holic Rehabilitation Center at Black Moun tain, and is consultant on Alcoholic Rehabili tation Programs in connection with Mental Health Centers. For the past two years he has been Regional Alcoholism and - Drug Abuse Program Director for the Western Region. He, comes to Brevard at different intervals, to work with our Transylvania Mental Health Service when visits can be worked into his schedule. He came last year to “help us out” and is continuing to fill a real need. Dr. Byers has had many years of experi ence in developing programs in communities for the 'prevention of mental illness, education about mental health and in the treatment of the men tally ill. Mrs. Lollis is well known in Transylvania Countv for her long years of work in the field of Public Health. She is on loan from that department to the program and is a valuable aid as she brings to this new program her knowledge and concern for the people of the county. Ov er 1.4 million women or 36 percent of all professional wo men, were teaching in elemen tary and secondary schools in 1969. From The Broadcaster Four Students Nominated For Morehead Four Brevard High School seniors have been nominated for the Morehead Scholarship. The nominees are Joe Broth erton, Harry Hill, Robert Mel ton, and Steve Morgan, who has Withdrawn from the competi tion at this time. Scholastic ability, leadership capabilities, and extra-curricu lar activities were considered in the choice of these young men. Evidence of moral force of character and interest in fellow classmates were also taken into consideration. During Joe Brotherton’s freshman year, he was a mem ber of the BHS wrestling team. Be was presented that year, as well as the following year, with the annual NEDT award. Joe has been a member of the French Club for three years and i~ now serving as presi dent. He has been a member of the Chess Club for two years and receptionists. The Transylvania Mental Health Author* ity is the unseen but ever present sponsor of the mental health program. Its members are the Transylvania County Commissioners and Donald Lee Mocre, acts as Chairman. This body is responsible for obtaining and allocat ing funds, for coordinating our program with the State program and for appointments of personnel. Because this is a community sponsored pro gram the Mental Health Authority has appoint ed, as an Advisory Board, persons from the com munity to represent all areas. The Board acts as advisors to set up policy, to aid in furthering the program in the community and to recommend to the Mental Health Authority the needs which have to be met. Harry Hill has been a mem ber of the Student Council for three years and has participat ed actively in barketball, track, golf, and chess. For two years, Harry has been president of “BODCO” Jurior Achievement Company which was awarded “Company of the Year” for the year 1970-71, as well as several progressive awards. Selected as the mo t valuable Junior Achiever of the eleventh grade. Harry won an expense paid trip to the national con vention where he spent a week on the Indiana University Campus. He was al o recom mended to attend the Governor’s School in Raleigh. This year, Harry is a member of the Booster Club and the Varsity Club, and is vice-presi dent of the BHS Key Club. Band member for four years, Robert Melton has also been ac tive in MYF, the church choir, and the Boy Scouts. In his fresh man year he was presented with the NEDT award and as a sophomore he went on the Phil mont Expedition. Robert has been a member of the French Club for two years and has been treasurer of his Junior Achievement company for two years. During the aca demic year 1970-’71, Robert was a member of the National Hon MCREHEAD NOMINEES, Rob ert “Bob” Melton, Harry Hill and Joe Brothertcn, are showing their great skill as physicists in finding the mass of Joe’s hand. or Society and was selected to be a Junior Marshall. Chosen as a representative of Erevard High School, Robert participated in the math con test held at Western Carolina University.
