TRANSYLVANIA'S
MfNTAL HEALTH PROGRAM
By - Dr. Joanna Bjrara
Consulting Psychologist
Before we go on with some of the things
children take to school with them I’d like to
think with you today about the Mental Health
Program itself.
We were grieved to lose Dr. Alfred M.
Elwell as director of the program. We are
pleased to announce that Dr. Janies W. Tyson
has been appointed to that position.
, ®r. Tyson is a local physician affiliated t
with Newland Clinic. He received his medi- ’
cal degree from the University of Texas, Med
ical Division at Galveston and served in the
Marine Corps at Cherry Point.
We are fortunate to have this young man
who is interested in the mental health of our
community and one who has had experience in
working with drug abusers.
With Dr. Tyson at the head the present
staff hopes to push on in developing the men
tal health of Transylvania County. The pres
ent staff includes:
Neil P. Mitchell, M.D..D.P.M. psychiatrist,
Joanna Byers, Ph.D., psychologist, Jessie Lollis,
Ii.N., P.H.N. who is acting coordinator of the
program and Hilda Pustorino, Secretary.
Dr. Mitchell is the Director of the Alco
holic Rehabilitation Center at Black Moun
tain, and is consultant on Alcoholic Rehabili
tation Programs in connection with Mental
Health Centers. For the past two years he has
been Regional Alcoholism and - Drug Abuse
Program Director for the Western Region.
He, comes to Brevard at different intervals, to
work with our Transylvania Mental Health
Service when visits can be worked into his
schedule. He came last year to “help us out”
and is continuing to fill a real need.
Dr. Byers has had many years of experi
ence in developing programs in communities for
the 'prevention of mental illness, education about
mental health and in the treatment of the men
tally ill.
Mrs. Lollis is well known in Transylvania
Countv for her long years of work in the field
of Public Health. She is on loan from that
department to the program and is a valuable
aid as she brings to this new program her
knowledge and concern for the people of the
county.
Mrs. Pustorino, the only full time staff
member serves us all as, secretary, liason person
