Science for Yoj BY BOB BftOim V PROBLEM: The Arrow. NEEDED:. A .needle and short thread. DO THIS: Throw the needle, point first, at a window curtain. It is likely to go straight as an arrow, and stick into the curtain. Try throwing it without ithe thread, and it is not likely to stick into the curtain, but will fall to the floor. HERE'S WHY: When the needle is thrown it is given momentum. The thread tends to hold it back, because of air resistance, and this slight pull backward on the eye end of the needle tends to keep the point moving foward. This is the principle of the arrow. Without the thread the needle direction cannot be controlled well. This con trol is similar to the balance stick used to guide early rockets. The Scouts, with Webelos leader Don Pinney and Dick Ross, started out Saturday morning with packs on their backs and an air of anticipa tion. Their destination — Sam’s Knob in Pisgah Forest. The first part of the trip was strictly routine, but. when they neared the headwaters of west fork of the Pigeon River, they noticed that the road was completely blocked A beautiful 63-foot fir tree, held horizontally in the air by a giant crane, was occupy ing every inch of the road way, as workmen bnsied themselves cutting boughs and tying the remaining ones with ropes. Cameramen were taking pictures while state troopers and forest officials were closely supervising the operation. It didn’t take the hoys long to find out that they were witnessing the cut ting of the national Christmas tree, soon to be carried to Washington, D. C., and placed on the lawn on the White House. In view of such a momentous happening the business of set ting up camp and cooking out seemed secondary' somehow. However, the boys did manage to get past the tree on foot and hiked some three miles up into the forest where they set up camp for the afternoon. There they practiced many outdoor skills and learned how to pitch tents, all the while thinking of the work going on down below. On the way back, the boys stopped again and saw that the tree had been placed on a flat bed truck with the aid of two cranes, all freshly painted a bright yellow and belong ing to McLeod Trucking and Rigging out of Charlotte. This firm was to transport the tree to Washington free of charge with an escort of state troopers from various states all the way. With the tree properly load ed, the boys wasted no time in collecting a souvenir of the day. One boy had a hatchet, and with it he chopped from the remains some pieces of the national Christmas tree for all of the Scouts to take home with them. Luck was with the boys on Saturday, for the cutting of the tree had been delayed until then because of rain and fog that would have impaired the quality of a documentary film sponsored by N. C. Savings and Loan League and to be dis tributed by the Travel and Pro motion Division of the N. C. Department of Natural and Eco nomic Resources. Because of the delay a group of Webelos Scouts from Brevard were able to witness a historic event, and if you look closely at the documentary film, you may recognize a familiar face. ACROSS 3.
