The average school has transported 67 pupils each day and made 1.69 trips per day. The average bus traveled 37.6 miles each day and the total annual mileage for all buses was 67,942,164. The cost for this transpor tation was $21,332,672, in cluding contract transporta tion and replacement buses. The average school bus in North Carolina gets just under five and a half miles to the gallon, it costs slightly more than a penny a mile to repair school buses, and 98 per cent of the students who are trans ported to school travel by school bus. Dare County operates the smallest number of school bus es. 18. The largest umber, 452, are operated by the Charlotte Mecklenbitrg ((County Schools. The buses in Graham County travel the fewest miles per year, 126,984. And Charlotts Mecklenburg buses travel the farthest, 3,760,408 miles a year. In Transylvania county the number of regular school bus es operated during the 1970 71 school year was 35. The buses traveled 251, 159 miles and carried 2,804 pupils. The total cost was 84, 573.25, or an average of 30.16 per pupil and .3367 per mile. The average cost statewide for the 1970-71 school year was *3059 per bus, $30.69 per pu pil, and .3026 per bus mile of operation. He was a veteran of World War II and was employed by the U. S. Navy as a clerk prior to his retirement. He had lived most of his life in Transylvania county. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Roxie Rautas of St. Peters burg, Fla., Mrs. S. F. Holland of Pisgah Forest and Mrs. Ida Land Cocoa, Fla.; five brothers, Surplus Food Warehouse To Be Open On 15th, 16th, 17th James. William and Alvin of Pisgah Forest, L. E. of Detroit and J. D. Parker of Atlanta. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Frank Moody Funeral Home, Brevard. The Rev. Joe Medford offici ated. Burial was in Turkey Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Grady Nicholson. Donald Erwin. Thomas A. and Thomas R. Land. The Transylvania County Surplus Commodity Ware house will be opened Decem ber 15th, 16th and 17th from 9:00 to 3:00.
