to juveniles, new legislation re
lating to marihuana and control
led substances, and other sub
jects as a part of the continuing
legal education of judees from
the thirty districts of the state.
At a business meeting of the
District Court Judges Associ
ation, officers for 1972 were
elected.
Chief Judge Phil Carlton
from Pinetops was elected
President. Chief Judge Ga'-h of
Brevard was named "Vice-Presi
dent. Judge Rhoda Billings of
Winston Salem was re-elected
Secretary-Treasurer, and Judge
Robert Leatherwood, III, of
Bryson City was elected to the
Board of Governors of the As
sociation, representing the 4th
division and succeeding Judge
Gash in that post.
Judge Gash was elected a dis
trict court judge for the 29th
judicial district in 1968 when
the district court system was
activated in Henderson, Mc
Dowell, Polk, Rutherford and
Transylvania counties.
He was appointed Chief
Judge by Chief Justice Bobbitt
in July 1970 and has served in
that capacity since that date.
Judge Gash has, for the past
two years, represented the
iudges of the western fourth of
the state on the Board of Gov
ernors of the District Court
Judges Association.

Truck registrations totaled
16,959,182 in 1969. An addi
tional 911,825 trucks were own
ed by federal, state, and local
governments, excluding the
military.
