Hints From The County Extension BlU Chairman By . JERRY PURSER Safe Holiday* When Trimming the Tree — Do not place the tree near sources of heat, in doorways or paths of exit. Candles should never be used on a tree. Check all electric cords with lights and extension cord for frays. Purchase light and cord sets that carry a UL marker. Turn off lights when you leave the house or go to sleep. Do not overload circuits by having too many plugs in one outlet. When Preventing Fire — Christmas trees can be one of the biggest fire hazards in the home during the holiday sea* son. Select the freshest tree pos sible a few days before trim ming. Cut the end off diagonally at least one inch above the original cut. Stand the tree in Haas, Oink of VARNET& adv. water, wet dirt or sand as soon as possible and add additional water daily. Assign someone to check the tree daily for dryness. Beekeeping Several beekeepers have re ported that they have had sev eral hives of bees to complete^ die out during the past couple of months. We hear reports of an over supply, but as long as we are producing only a fraction of the trees used in North Carolina there is room for expansion. Christmas trees offer an excellent return for the investment made. However, it rdtjuires from 7 - 10 years to realize a return on this invest ment. Christmas tree produc tion can obtain additional infor mation bv contacting the Exten sion Service Office. «•••••»•»»• •MtMUMMMI •<••••••••( Laugh Corner } Artist: “It took me 20 years to recognize that I have no talent as a painter.” Friend: “Does that mean you’re Riving up your brush and palette?” Artist: “Can’t afford to now.
