Regulation* Cited
Tax Listing Begins On January
4th, Books In Townships First
Tax listing in Transylvania
county for 1972 will begin on
Tuesday, January 4th, accord
ing to an announcement
coming today from the Tran
sylvania County Board of
Commissioners.
The Township books will be
in each township through Jan
uary 15, except for Brevard,
which will be at the Tax Super
visor’s office.
Each person owning real
property, land and/or build
ings and each person owning
or in possession of personal
propery on January 1st,
1972, and all mole between
the ages of 21 and 50 are re
quired to list during the
month of January.
The tax listing books are lo
cated in each township for a
period of 10 days to provide a
more convenient service for the
people living there, so please
list while the books are in the
township if possible as this pre
vents hardships later on where
long lines in the Tax Super
visor’s office means a longer
waiting period. ,

the Tax Supervisor’s office far

Connestee Community Tabloid
Published, Reports On Progress
Readers of The Transylvania
Times will be interested in the
tabloid insert in this week’s pa
per.
This new tabloid, which will
be published from time to time,
is entitled “The Connestee
Community News”.
Because of postal regulations,
this tabloid is included only in
those Times that are sold on the
news stand and those delivered
by carrier boys. This circulation
totals 3,000.
However, the Connestee De
velopment Corporation is mail
ing out copies to those persons
who have purchased lots and to
others.
The paper reviews the prog
ress that is being made in the
Connestee Falls residential com
munity.
It also carries Season’s Greet
ings to their many new friends
in Transylvania county.

Temperatures were a bit
above the normal for the season
again during the past week,
hitting averages of 58 and 39.
The week’s high was 69 this
past Tuesday afternoon while
the low was 18 degrees on Sun*
day the 19th.
North Carolina’s extended
outlook for Thursday through
Saturday calls for partly cloudy
weather throughout the period.
Scattered showers over the state
Saturday, possibly beginning in
the mountains by late Friday.

Baskets To Needy Families

175 needy families on Friday
and Saturday of last week.
Coordinated by the Jaycees
and supported by many Tran
sylvania civic, church and pri
vate groups, the Christmas
House received a very generous
response to the appeal to “Make
your own Christmas more
meaningful by helping others.”
“Many Transylvania needy
families do not have a suffic
iency of warm clot bin e, food
for special holiday dinners,
and presents to eo under the
tree for the children,” said
the concerned citizens groups.

heard over WPNF-Radio this

ning actress Helen Hayes, along
with the voices of John Stewart
and Judith Beckman.

more than 40 cans of fruits and
vegetables, a 7-lb ham, a 3-lb.
fruit cake, and one pound of
mixed nuts.
Included for the more than
800 children in the families re
ceiving this help were tubes of
toothpaste and toothbrushes.
Each family also received
a clothing box with new and
used clothing articles select
ed by volunteer workers for
the individual families.
New items distributed to the
more than 175 families were 70
dozen pairs of underwear; 12
dozen pair of sleepers, 50 doz
en pair of socks, 20 dozen pair
of jeans, 300 jumpers (sewn
by the ladies of the communi
ty); and 225 new blankets.

tween 4,000 and 5,000 articles of
clean, serviceable clothes.

guests of honor at, their re
tirement party last Thursday
evening.
Retiring were Mrs. Zue L.
Durant. R. N.; Miss Lydia
Stone, G. N.: and Mrs. Katie
Garren, Nurses’ Aid.
Mrs. Durant trained at St.
Vincent’s Hospital in Birming
ham, Alabama. She worked in
Birmingham until she came to
Brevard in June, 1962. She has
been a surgical nurse at the
Community Hospital until re
tirement for medical disabili
ty, which became effective
Sept. 29th of this year.
Miss Stone trained at the,
then, Roper Hospital in Char
leston* S. C. This later became
the hospital at the Medical Col
lege of South Carolina. She

local merchants expect a rush
of last minute shoppers on
Thursday and Friday.
Stores are still well stocked
with holiday merchandise.
They will be closed on
Christmas day, and several
firms will also close next
Monday.

October Collections
Sales Tax Revenue Is Still
Running Ahead Of Expectations
A check for $24,103.14 will
soon be sent to Transylvania
and her municipalities for
sales tax collections during
October, according to the
State Revenue department.
This is the fourth month since
the sales tax of one per cent in
the county began on July 1st.
Tax received for the various
months is as follows:
July —. $21,148.00
August_$21,911.39
September_$21,054.95
October_$24,103.14
Total $88,817.48
The figures are tor net col
lections, according to I. L. Clay
ton, Commissioner of Revenue,
who reported them.
According to the collections
so far, the yearly total will ex
ceed expectations and estimates
of several months ago.
According to Donald Lee
Moore, Chairman of the Coun
ty Board of Commissioners,
the county will receive the
money on a quarterly basis,
and it will be divided at that
time.
Distribution will be on the
basis of tax valuation in Tran
sylvania, in Brevard and at
Bosnian.
