C., THURSDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1971 * SECTION THREE * 1 On December 30th Two Brevard Teenagers To Tell Junior Achievement Story On TV Two Brevard area teenag ers will give television listen ers this week an idea of their experiences as heads of business. Harry Hill, Jr., and Marie Yvonne Hooper, leaders in the 1971-72 Junior Achievement program in Transylvania Coun ty, will be guests of Peggy Den ny on “Today in the Piedmont.” The Greenville Station WFBC program will be telecast on Channel 4 December 30th at 1 p. m. Gilbert H. Johnson of Olin Corporation, manager of the Junior Achievement program in Transylvania County, will accompany the youths to ex plain the purposes and ac complishments of the pro gram. They also will demon strate items manufactured and sold by the four com panies. ' Miss Hooper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L. Hooper of Route 2, Brevard, is presi dent of Duo Company which manufactures and sells candle holders. Hill is the son of Mr. and and Mrs. Harry Hill, Sr. of Hawthorne Drive. Ho is pres ident of Vodco Company which makes and sella walnut desk sets. A participant also In the 1970-71 program, he won a week’s expense • paid trip to the National Junior Achievement Conference in Indiana as outstanding Junior in the Transylvania program. Heading the other companies are John Mehaffey of Route 1, Pisgah Forest, president of Newco Company which pro duces and sells ice scrapers; and Buddy Whitmire of Route 2, Horse Shoe, president of Proco Company which also se lected candle holders as the product to make and sell. They are among 98 high school students participating in the four companies which are sponsored by businesses in the area Sponsorship is both finan cial and advisory. In addi tion to providing funds to support Junior Achievement, area businesses are represent ed by personnel who serve either on the Board of Direc tors or as advisors ip individ ual companies. Olin Corporation provides the four advisors to Newco Company which is co-sponsor ed by Mitchell - Bissell Com pany. RCA Service Company sponsors Vodco Company. The Duo Company is sponsored by Du Pont. Officers of the board of di rectors are: J. S. Judson of RCA Service Company, presi dent; Arthur Beddoe and Frank McGibboney of Olin Corporation, vice presidents; Charles Conrey of RCA Ser vice Company, secretary; and J. Mallory Pate of First Union National Bank, treasurer. Under guidance of the Board of Directors and company ad visors, the participants in Jun ior Achievement programs get a practical course in capitalism. Each company organizes itself along lines of a small - scale business, elects officers, de cides on what product to make and sell, determines how to go about it, and issues shares of stock to help finance the pro gram. Eventually, in the wind up of the program, there will be redemption of stock and an or derly closing of business. As with any public owned company in the free enter prise system, the success or failure of the ventures will be judged by the financial sta tus of the companies. Sanders OAKLAND — A large con gregation of friends and rela tives attended the funeral of Talvin Miller last Tuesday. His funeral is the first one to be held at the new Lake Toxaway Baptist church. Christmas was celebrated here in Oakland in a quiet, friendly way. Mrs. Jennie Sue McCall and Mrs. Ola Sanders visited their friends Mr. and Mrs. Frank Revis at Rosman Christmas day. We are very glad Louis Me Neely has returned home from a year’s tour of Vietnam. He was at church for Sunday serv ices. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Queen and two children of Little Moun tain. Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Owen of Augusta, Ga., Mr. and Mrs. David Norton and son Paul and Roland Grey and three children of Pickens were Christmas visi tors of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Norton, and also a grandson Eddie Norton of Thomasville Orphanage. Monday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. I. S. Sanders were Weaver Taylor of Asheville and son Sp. 6 Rex Taylor of Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Citizens Urged To Nominate “Young Man Of The Year99 Stanley Tucker, Brevard Jaycee president, urges all citizens of Transylvania Coun ty to nominate their choice for Outstanding Young Man of the Year for 1971. Nomination forms are avail able at First Union National Bank, First Citizens Bank and Trust Company and at the Chamber of Commerce office. They can also be obtained by contacting Eugene R. Baker, DSA chairman. Completed forms should be returned to Mr. Baker at 104 Allison Road, Brevard, N. C. 28712. A secret panel of local judges, all over the age of 36, will select the winner from those nominations sub mitted to the chairman by January 10, 1972. The winner will be announced at a ban quet to be held on January 21st. The Distinguished Service Award has been presented by the Jaycees each year since 1947 to a young man between 'the ages of 21 and 36 for “out standing community service through loyal, faithful, and un selfish efforts resulting in a lasting contribution to the com munity, state, and nation.” Many of the current civic leaders can be found among the names of the past winners of this award, who are as follows: I 1947 Cecil J.
