- Lions And Rotarians Hear Of Work In Junior Achievement The outstanding work that is being done here to the Junior Achievement program was highlighted in programs at meetings of the Brevard Lions - dub Had the Brevard Rotarians during the past week. Speaking before the Lions were Glenn Echols, advisory and JA members Harry Hill and Marie Hooper. The Rotarians heard Gilbert » -Johnson, advisor, and Robert Melton and. Miss Hooper. Both dubs were responsive audiences. Ninety-eight teenagers in Brevard are participating in the four companies of Junior Achievement, and Brevard is the smallest area, in population, in the country with a JA pro gram of this size. The companies and their sponsors include: DUO, spon sored by Du Pont; NEWCO, sponsored by Olin; PROCO, sponsored by Mitchell-Bissell and Olin; and VODOO, sponsor ed by RCA. Each of the four companies has adult advisers who work with the participants, but the - adults insist that all decisions • .are made by the Junior Achiev ers. ' ■ For the advisers, there is the • dual gain of helping others • while gaining invaluable experi . ence for themselves. The youthful speakers stated: ^ “We not only get excellent '..training, but we learn all the ' principles of the free enter prise system”. They told of their work and t their problems and then ex hibited products that they are now making. According to the national program, the Junior Achieve ment enterprises operate as follows: Each Junior Achievement company is organized in the fall as a miniature corporation. There are usually 20 students in each company. They are the Board of Direc tors, the working force and the sales staff. They elect their own officers. They choose a business, either a manufacturing or a service operation. They capitalize their business through the sale of stock at $1.00 a share. They 9et up production lines and plan distribution. They advertise, promote and sell their company’s product, or service. They pay themselves salaries and wages as management and as the working force. They de cide on sales commissions for themselves as salesmen. They keep company books and records. They pay rent for their work space and equipment, and must meet depreciation charges on equipment and machinery. They pay taxes. They pay dividends to their stockholders if their enterprise is profitable. They liquidate their com panies at the end of the pro gram year and issue stockhold er reports. .
