Neal Lance was high for the Caveliers with 30 points. Hester hit 28 points for the Tornadoes and McClure added 24 to pace their 11th win against four losses. Bob Miller, former Erka standout, scored 18 points in a reserve role. Montreat jumped to a 13-7 lead in the first half but Bre vard was able to rally for a 40 32 halftime advantage. Then, in the first four minutes of the second half, the Tornadoes went on a scoring tear and out pointed Montreat by 16-1 to put the game away. Montreat is now 8-6. WPNF mor A third member of the 1971 Brevard Blue Devils football team has signed a full grant-in-aid to attend col lege and continue his grid iron career there. Hard hitting linebacker Mitch Burr, who is also cap tain of Brevard’s undefeated wrestling team, signed last Wednesday night with the Western Carolina University Catamounts. Young Burr moved here to Brevard last summer from Wadesboro, where he htit: been an outstanding athlete at Bowman High there. He was a tremendous defen sive performer for the Blue Devils this past season from his middle linebacker position earning all conference honors and third team AU-WNC honors in his only year of play in the area. A tribute to his outstand ing leadership ability came when the Blue Devils elected him defensive captain even though he performed only one year as a Blue Devil. “Mitch Burr is an outstand ing student and athlete, and we’re delighted to have him choose Western Carolina for his higher education,” stated Cata mount Assistant Coach John Wike. who recruited and signed young Burr. “He’ll be joining his broth er Steve, who was our lead ing pass receiver on our freshman squad last, fall, and hell aho be joining a whole host of former Brevard play ers who are with us now at Western Carolina,” Coach Wike commented. Joe Hunter, Eagle Moss, Charlie Carr, Lamar Clark and Gary Nelson, all former out standing Blue Devils, will be performing for the Catamounts next fall. Head football coach and athletic director Bob Waters of Western Carolina was also present when Mitch signed last week. "We at Western feel most fortunate that Mitch elected to come with us, because we fed that he has a great collegiate athletic career ahead of him,” Coach Waters stated. Merrill’s had three in double figures, paced by William Hoop ers’ 39 points, followed by Charles Owenby with 34 and Dean Sumner with 19. Even though they lost. Cardinal Cleaners had five in double figures. Bill Wike and Ken Baughn each had 18 points, followed by Charles Gant with 14 and Kay Myers and Mike Clark with 10 points each. In the night cap, American Thread whipped Pisgah Texaco 77 to 56, as Gary Adcock cap tured high scoring honors with 22 points. Also in double fig ures for the victors were Mau rice Whitemire with 20 points, Phil Dodson with 14 and Perry Harper with 12. Pisgah, Texaco had only one player in doable figures as Robin Drake dropped in 21 points. Tornadoes Whip Hiwassee 105-84 For Tenth Hoop Win Of Season Brevard College combined the double-fignre shooting of four players in an explosive second half to crnise to an easy 105-84 victory over Hi wassee College last Saturday night at Madisonvllle, Tenn. Mike Coles led the Tornadoes in scoring with 31 points, 19 of them coming in the second half. George Hester hit 21, Eddie Taylor added 20 and Ricky Mc Clure netted 14 points, 12 of them in the final half. The Tornadoes, after hit ting only 41 per cent from the floor in the opening half to take a 44-40 lead at inter mission, exploded in the sec ond period for 61 points on a 73 per cent accuracy from the floor. Brevard, which ran its lead to 30 points at 90-00 at one p«int, also out-rebound ed the hosts, 50-32. The victory boosted-the Tor nadoes’ record to 104.
