erend and Mrs. Harry R. Speakman from Irwin,
Pennsylvania, announce the engagement of their
daughter, Alice Jean, to David Lynn Parker, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Parker, of Rosman.
Miss Speakman is a graduate of Punsutawney High
School and is presently a junior at Ashbury Col
lege where she is studying art and music educa
tion. Mr. Parker is a senior at Ashbury College
and is planning to continue his studies at Ashbury
Theological Seminary following his College grad
uation. He is also employed at the Good Samari
tan Hospital of Lexington, Kentucky.

the place of the original UDC
Chapter in Brevard, the Tran
sylvania Chapter, which was
disbanded on November 1,
1950: and embodies several
of those members and also
some members of the original
Children of the Confederacy.
It may be remembered by
many that the original Tran
sylvania Chapter started the
library which became the
Book And Plate

will meet February 1st, at
the home of Mrs. W. D.
Thomason, Jr., Dogwood
Drive, at 8:00 o’clock in the
evening. *
Mrs. Dana Harris will have

The Brevard Wednesday
Club met January 19 with

The club heard a most in
formative and entertaining
program on the life of the
American author, Louisa May
Alcott given by Mrs. Smart.
As illustration Mrs. Smart
exhibited a collection of dolls
depicting characters from
Miss Alcott’s most popular
book “Little Women”. This
book is Miss Alcott’s own
life story.
Louisa May Alcott first
published in 1855 when her
collection of fairy stories,
“Flower Fables” came off the
press. This book was the re
sult of tales the author made
up for the daughter of Ralph
Waldo Emerson. This noted
American author wrote from
personal experience, giving
