Mr. Henderson was a native Transylvanian a U. S. Army veteran, and was employed at the Brevard Du Pont plant at the time of his death. Funeral services for him were held last Saturday at Oak Grove Baptist church, where he was a member. Rev. Tommy Owen and Rev. Jack Plemmons offici ated and burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors, other than the wife and daughter, include the mother, Mrs. Agnes Baxter Hen derson of Lake Toxaway; four sisters, Mrs. Sandra Henderson of Lake Toxaway, Mrs. Brenda Beaty of Charlotte, Mrs. Vivian Williams of Charlotte, and Mrs. Betty Reese of Waverly, Fla.; and three brothers, Joe Hen derson of Brevard. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Powell of Greer spent the weekend with the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Breedlove. Charles Barton, of Atlantic Christian College, Wilson, spent the weekend here with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bar ton. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Barton, whose home was recently de stroyed by fire, are now living in a large mobile home set up near the place where their home stood. Floyd Jones, who was a pa tient in Mountain Home hos pital for several weeks has re turned to his home here. Bom on August 13, 1930, near Vinegar Bend, Alabama, (population 37), Mr. Mizell be came known throughout the na tion as “Vinegar Bend” Mizell during his ten years as a major league baseball pitcher. During his career with the St. Louis Cardinals and Pitts burgh Pirates, Mizell proved to be a consistently valuable performed and was named to the National League All-Star team in 1939. In 1960, he helped pitch the Pirates to a National League champion ship and a World Series vic of Thomas Henderson, of the Quebec community who passed away Thursday, January 21st. Turning his attention to poli tic®, Mizell was elected in 1966 to the Davidson County Board of Commissioners and served as chairman of the board. He won election to the United States Congress In November, 1968, as a Re publican, and was re-elect ed in 1970 by more than twice the margin of his 1968 vic tory. Since going to Washington, Mizell has been active in such areas as rural development, ef ficiency in government, spend ing (winning a “Watchdog of the Treasury” award in 1970), local control of schools textile import policy, social security benefits, the prisoner-of-war issue, and tobacco legislation. The congressman is a member of the House Com mittees on Public Works and Agriculture. His subcommit tee assignments on Public Works include economic de velopment, reads, flood con trol and internal develop ment, public buildings and -grounds, and investigation and oversight. In the Agriculture Commit tee, he is a member of the sub committees on tobacco, cotton, and - oilseeds and rice. Mizell is a second term member of the executive committee of the Republi can Congressional Committee, which overseas campaign pol icies and operations, and con tacts ■ public Information program on Republican ac tivities. Re is also a menbagyf the House Republican fllfsearch Committee’s Task Force on Rural Development, and the Nations] Advisory Council of Teen-age Republicans. Mizell has received num erous awards, and was nam ed Distinguished Citizen of 1969 by the George Washing ton University, and was the Southern Baptist Christian Athlete of the Year in 1951. The congressman served in the U. S. Army in 1953 54, and is a member of the American Legion. Misell is married to the for mer Nancy Ruth McAlpine of Davidson County, North Caro lina. The Mizells have two sons, Wilmer David, Jr. (Dave), 15, and James Daniel (Danny), age 9. Mizell is a deacon in the Christian and Missionary Al liance Church, and frequent ly serves as a lay speaker.
